The Kombo Foni Forestry Association (KOMFFORA) was established in 1998 as the first association of community forests in The Republic of The Gambia. Within the last 50 years, The Gambia has experienced rapid deforestation resulting in higher temperatures, lower rainfalls, increased prevalence of bush fires, and accelerated soil depletion. In response KOMFFORA works directly with 30 communities in the Kombo and Foni Districts promoting reforestation initiatives through community based forest management training, extension activities, and project monitoring. For more than 13 years KOMFFORA has been empowering over 50,000 community members to successfully manage their traditional lands. KOMFFORA has become a leader in sustainable forest management, improving lives and protecting the environment.
