The Story

Thank you for supporting the Nikki Giovanni LEAP Scholarship Fund which sends girls and boys in Konko Village (Eastern Region of Ghana) to the secondary school of their choice.

LEAP'S MISSION

LEAP's mission is to use innovative literacy, school improvement, and girl's empowerment programming to expand educational opportunities and to strengthen global communities.

LEAP'S ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Worked with the men and boys of Konko Village to build bookshelves for the school's  first library and provided more than 750 books and over 500 items in school supplies
  • Awarded a full scholarship for the first young woman of the village to attend secondary school
  • Provided funding for the purchase of materials to make bricks to be used to complete work on the open air classrooms
  • Conducted reading, writing, and empowerment workshops in the eleven classrooms
  • Purchased and assembled recreational supplies
  • Provided creative writing workshops for the members of the Girl's Literacy Club
  • Co-sponsored and facilitated an international conference in the capital city of Accra, providing literacy professional development training which served 300 Ghanaian educators - Nikki Giovanni delivered keynote speech.

Acclaimed Poet, Educator & Literary Activist Nikki Giovanni shared that, "After a trip with LEAP for Ghana which builds literacy, I was reminded that people are really giving. I'll never change my habit of saying yes. I believe it is important to find time to share some energy with someone or something else." -- O -- The Oprah Magazine

In honor of Miss Giovanni's dedication to LEAP's mission, the co-founders of LEAP, Kwame Alexander & Tracy Chiles McGhee are proud to announce the Nikki Giovanni LEAP Scholarship Fund.

Monies raised will support the Achievers Class 2014 of Timber Junction, Konko Village, whose mantra is "Together we stand, divided we fall." This brilliant class of 12 scholars must overcome astronomical challenges to further their education beyond junior high school. In Ghana, all high schools cost to attend. The average tuition is $1000. We are seeking to raise $1500 per student which will cover the annual tuition, fees, and housing expenses.

When LEAP returns to the village this August 2014 with Miss Giovanni and a team of educators, artists, and activists, we can present the class with the financial resources they need with your generous support!

"I want to be a teacher to help impart knowledge to people in the village." - Prince

Please say YES and join the LEAP team in making a child's educational and career dreams come true - all donation amounts are truly appreciated.
