The Story

The Goal: To foster a new generation of Latina public service leaders that are ready to take leadership positions in the public sector. Your donation will go directly to providing leadership and public policy training to next year's fellows.

The Issue: In the City of Los Angeles, there is only one female elected official out of 18 possible elective positions, the lowest level of female participation of any major City in the United States. In the California State Legislature, only 25 percent of the Assembly members are women and 30 percent of the State Senators are women.

The Need: Research shows that women make government more transparent, inclusive and accessible. Women bring different priorities and experiences to public life, including perspectives that have been largely absent in public policy-making. Women change the way government works, and their voices are needed in legislative chambers around the country.

The Program: The Latina Public Service Academy provides government and public policy training and instruction to female high school juniors and seniors from low-income communities. The curriculum includes skill training as well as campaign and organizing modules to prepare them to run for elective office, or to work for elected or appointed officials. E

After the Program: Latinas gives each participant access to an internship with a local female elected official and place them in a voter registration or political campaign.

Since the start of the program, our LAtina fellows have already accomplished so much by having attended our public service academy. Some of our fellows are also doing a six-week internship in partnership with Las Fotos, that is cultivating their ability to engage with community members and strengthen their public speaking skills while also teaching them about photography.

If you want to know more about what the LAtinas program is doing for our current and future fellows visit our page at:http://www.hispanicheritage.org/programs/latinos-on-fast-track-loft/latinas/

and if you wish to help these young fellows out with more opporunities you can do so by donating to LOFT LAtinas right here:
