The Story

Hi folks!  For those of you who don't know me, my name is Harley and I'm a puppy mill survivor.  "Harley to the Rescue" is a fundraising campaign that began early this year.  My goal was to raise enough money to send National Mill Dog Rescue on a mission to save puppy mill dogs.  Not only did we raise enough money to rescue 64 dogs, we also raised enough money to provide them the veterinary care they needed.

We will not stop here, with the help of my best buddy, Teddy, we will continue to fundraise!  All donations will be designated specifically for National Mill Dog Rescue to fund rescues.

Currently we are planning a rescue that will leave Colorado on Sept 6th.  We will travel through Kansas and Missouri saving puppy mills dogs.  Stay tuned for more info!

NMDR has rescued more than 8,000 dogs from puppy mills over the past 6 years, and because they rely solely on donations/grants, they can only rescue as many dogs as their funding will allow.  They saved dogs just like me who spent their lives living in small wire cages; never having the opportunity to run and play, not knowing what a soft bed is, or the kind touch of a human hand. Some dogs never see the sunshine, and the saddest thing - they never experieced love. I know all about this because I spent 10 years living like that.

Teddy and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

How much does it cost to rescue a puppy mill dog?

The following information is a fair average and based on the 64 dogs saved during our first "Harley to the Rescue" mission.

Typically the rescue itself costs approx $2500.  This includes fuel for 2 large rescue vans driving approx 2000 miles each, rabies vaccinations and health certificates for all dogs rescued, and low budget accommodations for the rescue team.  Sometimes there are additional costs such as an emergency trip to the vet hospital in the middle of the night (Missy was having breathing problems).

Once all the dogs are back at the NMDR kennel, Lily's Haven in Colorado, each dog receives a complete veterinary exam, vaccinations, micro-chips, dental (often this is extensive for mill dogs) and spay/neuter.  This cost averages $200 for each dog.

Rescue = $2500
Veterinary expenses  = $12,800
Minimum cost to save 64 puppy mill dogs = $15,300

There are always some extenuating circumstances with each rescue.  Nana Pearl, the 14 year old poodle spent a week in the veterinary hospital once we returned to Colorado with her.  Prior to being rescued she had been attacked by a larger dog and was covered with puncture wounds, sadly she passed away. Missy, the little Yorkie that we raced to the emergency hospital during the night while on rescue, will need additional treatment.  Both Hope and Liberty, 2 puppies each with a deformed front leg had to see the orthopedic vet and Liberty will need an amputation.  Wyatt needed a large tumor removed.  Many dogs had ear, eye or skin infections.  As you might imagine the veterinary costs add up.

Though these costs might appear staggering, the rewards are priceless!

THANK YOU to our friends and supporters for raising the funds to save 64 dogs so far.  "Harley to the Rescue" is now an ongoing campaign to save puppy mill dogs.  All money goes directly to National Mill Dog Recue where they will earmark the funds specifically for rescue missions.
