The Story

Here it is, plain and simple:

My law firm will match any charitable donations by employees, dollar-for-dollar, up to $1,000 per employee, made between October 24 and December 20.

The Nelson B. Delavan Foundation and the Weir Foundation will match all donations to the Washington Humane Society, dollar for dollar, made before November 30.

That means that any dollar I donate to the Washington Humane Society today will become THREE dollars by the end of the year!  That means for every $17 out of my pocket, the Washington Humane Society gets $50!

I don't have the means to reach my $1000 law-firm-matching maximum myself, so help me make an impact!  Any money donated to this campaign will be donated to the Washington Humane Society on November 27, 2013 -- the first night of Channukah.  That donation will be matched by the Delavan and Weir Foundations, and then matched AGAIN by my law firm by the end of the year.  (Sadly, my firm could not arrange to send their matching donation before November 30, so we will have to settle for a 3x donation rather than a 4x donation.)

Although my firm will only match up to $1000, 100% of money donated through this campaign will go to the Washington Humane Society, even if we exceed my firm's $1000 matching maximum.

Why WHS?
Where else can a girl go in the district to sit in a room full of cats ("Kitty City") or play fetch with an excited dog, as many times a week as she likes, all for free?  Nowhere, I say.  It's the free-est therapy on the market.

So if you like animals, or if you like happiness, help me take advantage of all of these matching donations!  Your small gift will (almost) LITERALLY mean exponentially more.

Check out the WHS website for more information on this great organization!

I was at WHS last night to pick up two cats I am fostering (!!!) and I wanted to share a notable moment from the trip.  As I was preparing to pick up the cats and leave, I noticed a small white dog temporarily leashed behind the front desk.  He reminded me of the little bichon my family used to have when I was growing up...except that when he turned around, I could see a horrible wound on his back flank.  The skin looked to be missing almost down to the muscle --- I overheard someone mention that it was either an abscess or a burn.  Nobody knew, because the poor animal was not dropped off but rather found on the street in this injured condition.  He was at WHS to receive medical care and eventually to be adopted.

Two things about this situation struck me as amazing, one of which reflects on the beauty of dogs and one of which reflects on how great WHS is:

1.  Despite the pain this dog must have been in, and despite whatever horrible thing he went through to suffer such an injury, he was still wagging his tail at all the people who passed him.  He was wagging his tail while crying of course, but wagging it nonetheless.

2.  Every single WHS staff member who saw the dog offered it some kind of comfort, kind words, or expressed concern about its condition.  At some point, someone came up with the idea to give the dog a treat (and of course at the word "treat" he immediately stopped crying for a minute).  In other words, everyone truly cared about the plight of the dog.

Wow, just one day on the internet and we are already half way to our goal!  Amazing work, friends.  This is going to be one heck of a Paw-nukkah.
