Shelby was rescued from a kill shelter July 8th. She was impounded as a stray in early May and spent 2 months at the shelter in a kennel shared with multiple dogs. She was rescued with a total of 10 dogs. Her group was named after the characters from the Steel Magnolias movie. Once rescued she exhibited behavior indicative of a strong prey drive and a bit dominant. She had to spend her days seperated from most of the other dogs in her first week in rescue. She did not play well with others. This behavior later cost her a forever home with a very nice adoptive home. Our vet noted that she had several broken canine teeth and needed to be checked out at a facility for further evaluation. We learned that her teeth are causing her pain and discomfort and she will need at minimum of 3 extractions and other work done to remedy this pain. This work will cost over $500. She is worth it. To alleviate her pain and discomfort and to be sure she is pain free and will more easily find her forever home with her behavior reflecting who she really is.
We are a nonprofit organization ran soley by volunteers and use every last penny to offer services and to rescue at risk shelter pets. Our resources are scarce and we work to save as many lives as possible with every bit of them. Since the start of the rescue campaign known as Dona Ana Pets Alive! in May 2012 we have rescued nearly 500 at risk companion animals in our community and have successfully placed them into good homes. We could not do this without the help of the whole community. Please consider helping us with Shelby's medical bill so we can continue to save more animals like her and the hundreds before her and thousands after her.
