The Story

Michael was medically evacuated and hospitalized last week with severe complications from drug resistant malaria. He is still undergoing treatment in Kenya after emergency surgery for a ruptured spleen. He is a warrior of the heart and determined to heal from this parasite. His kidneys and liver took a hit from the malaria, but each day he is healing and getting stronger. He has been up walking with assistance, and he likens it to running a marathon (which he has done).

Michael is a loving husband and father of 4 young girls. The family lives in Tanzania but Michael and his wife, Holly, flew to Kenya because he needed more intense medical treatment. Their family is staying with their children in Tanzania while Michael is hospitalized; his girls look forward to his return home.

This is a financially stressful time for the Mulfords, and they need assistance to pay medical bills by the time of discharge, which is expected in the next two weeks. Please give whatever you can and share this page with your family and friends. Anyone who knows Michael knows he is compassionate, loving, determined, hardworking, selfless, and deeply rooted in his faith in God. He is an incredible human being. His ability to emerge from this battle with malaria is nothing short of a miracle. Thank you for your contribution!

Both Holly and I have been overwhelmed by this incredible outpouring of love and support. It was such a touching moment when we first went on the site and began to read all of the notes of encouragement and see all of the generous support from friends, family, and people we barely even know from all of the world that was just pouring in over the span of a few hours. At a time when we were both emotionally exhausted and physically spent, this unexpected cascade of love and support moved us to tears and gave us some fresh wind in our sails. We have been so blessed by friends and strangers coming to our rescue and support over these past weeks, it is hard to even put into words how grateful we are. Thank you so much for your part in this and for the very practical support during this time. Taking away the financial stress associated with the recent events has been such a gift to Holly and I, and we would like to thank you all so much.
On a personal note, I am out of the hospital and trying to regain my strength, while staying with some friends in Nairobi. I nearly passed out, only two minutes into my first physiotherapy session yesterday, but did much better today. We are hoping that I will regain enough strength and get an 'ok' from the doctor on Friday to travel back home to our kids in Mwanza this weekend. I still need all of your prayers though, as I continue to heal and recover. A few specific things are for my kidneys to get back to normal operations, for feeling to come back to my left forearm and thumb, and for my blisters and suture line to heal and stay infection free.
Normally, I pride myself on being a rapid and responsive emailer, but so far I haven't had the energy to yet write more than one or two emails. I look forward to getting to the point of being able to also write some personal notes too, but I guess that may be a bit down the road.
Thank you again…. your kindness, generosity and support have meant so much to us.
Michael (and Holly)

We are both so in awe of all the people that have come out to support us from all our walks in life--family, friends, coworkers, fellow students.  Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.  It is SUCH a relief to not have to worry about how we would come up for the money right now.  Thank you for helping us in this way.  Here is a bit more of the story of what happened to Mike: http://kitumaini.blogspot.com/2014/02/updates-inpatient-in-nairobi-miracles.html

We got news that today's malaria smear was negative for the first time since Mike got ill.  We are so thankful.  We are waiting for his kidney function tests to come back and his overall swelling to finally go down.  He is doing so well.  We are so overwhelmed by the giving since our family posted this on here. We are so thankful that paying the medical bills and costs associated with this crisis are no longer a stress that has been hanging over our heads.  Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all your help.  We are not alone.
