The Tragic Event:

On the evening of Tuesday, November 19, 2013, Justin Bowen, was involved in a tragic gun related incident which turned his life and the lives of his loved one's completely upside down. He sustained serious injuries including losing his left eye and most of his nose including his sinuses, due to the shotgun shell. Justin's fiancé, Tyler, witnessed this catastrophic event that left him fighting for his life, and that leaves her fighting for the one she loves. Justin is currently in a hospital that specializes in burn trauma and is equipped with the necessities to care for his extensive and severe injuries. Justin continues to undergo numerous surgeries and procedures daily, vigorously fighting to survive. I wish I could talk about the road ahead, but in a situation like this, you have to take it day by day.

Notes From Loved Ones:

Justin is an amazing man, he is one of the most thoughtful and genuine people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing and letting into our family. Justin is a beautiful pianist. Not even a week before this all occurred, Justin came with Tyler, my Mom, Hudson, and I to visit my grandfather in the nursing home. Justin got on that piano and took the dining hall by storm! Sitting beside him on the piano bench was his 4-month-old son, Hudson. Combining his two greatest loves, his family and music. He graced everyone with his presence as his fingers danced across the piano. His small act of kindness brought smiles, cheers, and laughter to staff and patients alike. Whether he is playing piano, making a joke, or simply being himself, he somehow always managed to have that effect. Family has dropped everything in their lives to make sure he is getting the best treatment available. We are by his bedside every possible moment. (We have to make Tyler leave)

I hope you can see this or have someone read it to you one day Justin, and it makes you proud. As proud as you were when you held Hudson for the first time. I will never forget that smile, the kind one only reads about in books.

- Madison Kerfoot (also referred to as sis)

How You Can Help:

Justin was the main provider for his family. Tyler is traumatized from witnessing this horrific event and is spending her days taking care of their son and being at the hospital. Unfortunately, leaving her unable to work. The family is willing to sacrifice anything and everything to do all that they can for Justin, but the economic toll is unavoidable. Doctors estimate the road to recovery for Justin will be long and extensive. We ask you to do whatever you can, whether you donate the spare change in your pocket at the end of the day, or $20. Everything and anything is the most appreciated. This fundraiser is to help with the medical, living, and other costs that have been and will be incurred as Justin continues to fight for his life.

It has been about four times that they have scheduled Justins basic surgery, which has been canceled everytime. (he was an add on). He also finally had his trache removed. Justins spirits are very high and believes god kept him here for a purpose. Which he did. I want to thank everyone who is praying for my family and helping us get through this.

Tomorrow Justin is undergoing his first and most basic part of plastic surgery. They will be basically putting plates in on his orbital bone and mesh everywhere else that was fractured (all of his right side of his face). Since this is just a basic and nesessity surgery the main focus is for him to be able breathe on his own, without having tubes in his nose.

It has been a good couple of days tomorrow the will remove his trache. Justin has also been able to get up and walk the hospital halls and chatter away. Things are starting to look up.

Sunday,December First, 2013.
Justin has been moved from the ICU to the step down unit. Unfortunately he has lost his left eye due to the global rupture from the gunshot. He also has a fractured nasal cavity, septum, dental arch, and maxillary. On a better note they reduced the size of his trachea and there is a device that helps enable him to talk, although it can be stressful for him because it is hard to understand. He is also able to drink thickened liquids now. Although this is a good sign, we still have a long journey ahead of us! The love and support has been getting me through this, please keep it up.
