The Story

Joey is an 8 pound fawn Italian Greyhound who came to Italian Greyhound Rescue Florida from a bad situation. We don't know much about his story except he ended up with an unscrupulous dog flipper at one point and two broken legs that were given minimal care. So minimal that the radius is fused to the ulna in his left leg. He was malnourished and neglected. After only a few days in rescue with his loving foster mom in Pensecola, he had a freak accident and rebroke his right leg. People from across the country and the state of Florida heard Joey's story and came together to arrange a 9+ hour transport from Pensecola to Tampa Bay so he could be tended to by the specialists at Blue Pearl and our Rescue Veterinarian Dr. Riley at All Creatures in Lutz. We were fearful he may loose the leg but luckily it was saved due to the care he received. Weighing in at only 6lbs at the time of surgery, it was a success and his leg was saved. Joey was fostered for three weeks by Dr. Riley in her home and is now still fostered in Tampa Bay while he recovers. While we were given considerable discounts for his complex surgery and other medical needs, the bills are approaching $2,500 for this little guy. If we don't raise the funds to pay back the Italian Greyhound Rescue Foundation, a 501c3, the Foundation won't be able to keep up the pace of providing the best care and chance at a forever home for our fosters. We pride ourselves in the state of Florida on always doing the best we can for our furkids in Rescue. Please help us continue to do what we do best, save the Iggies!

Yesterday Joey had a great day at the dog park with the Italian Greyhound Meetup Tampa Bay group! He got to meet so many new people and a very special former foster named Rue. Rue also came to rescue with a broken leg but now she has a wonderful forever home! Joey had a lot of fun watching Rue race around the dog park with the other Iggies and he someday aspires to be able to run again just like her! Luckily for Rue, she only had one leg break, not three like Joey. For now, Joey is just learning to walk on all four legs instead of upright and still isn’t using his left leg for the most part. He can almost walk faster upright than on all fours. Luckily he likes to imitate his pal Rudy and Rudy is teaching him how to walk again. Rudy is an antique iggy that had both of his front legs broken as a pup and when he first came to rescue in 2010 often use to just walk upright on his hind legs as well. Now Rudy has a prance that is envied by even the most prestigious show iggies ;-) So really who better to teach young Joey how to rock the walk?!?! Joey is really excited about seeing a rock band on the 13th with his foster mom downtown and looking forward to his BBQ fundraiser on the 27th! On April 18th he will be at Pawsitively Posh Pooch in the evening for Yappy Hour as well. Because he is still on kennel rest and is not allowed off leash due to the potential for another leg break his foster mom plans on taking him out on the town as much as possible so he doesn’t get cabin fever. If you would like to come meet Joey at his event on the 27th please RSVP here: https://www.facebook.com/events/526358570736313/
