The Story

Ellie Hanjian, Ray and Tessa Whitaker and Laurel Redington Whitaker,  all residents of Martha's Vineyard, were in a terrible car accident on April 29th returning from vacation. Their car was struck in Virgina as they were heading home from Florida.. The Whitakers and Ellie were rushed to a nearby Hospital. Ellie went immediately into a four hour surgery to for a head injury and to remove a blood clot. Laurel has a severe concussion, a chipped patella, and broken toes.Ray has compression fractures in two vertebrae in his lower back. Tessa suffered whiplash.

Islanders helping Islanders is a fund to raise funds for both families who will have major medical expenses and lost time at work. Ellie will requires months of Rehab. Her Mother, Mary Holmes, who is the Memory Care Program Coordinator at Windemere, has taken a leave of abcence from her position to care for Ellie. Ray and Laurel, both of whom work at the YMCA and at WMVY Radio station will need time to heal.

All doantions will be split evenly between the two families.

Ellie is doing very well. She is working at her old job and going to Camp. She is still going off island to Doctors apt's for the next few months. She is doing remarkably well. Her parents believe this is due to all of the love and prayers that were being sent out for Ellie and they appreciate everyones support. They are very grateful.

Ellie is back on Island . She is doing well, tired and will need to take it very slow for a month or so. She stopped by the High School today. She will have a tutor come to her home to help her catch up with her School work. Tessa has been back at School for a few weeks. Ray and Laurel are on the mend as well. Ellie will continue to need Therapy. PT/OT as well as seeing some off Island Doctors for her head injury. She is fine cognitively and has been very fortunate to have had such good doctors and had great care. Both families are very appreciative of all the Community support and prayers and would like to extend their sincere thanks to everyone.

Ellie had surgery on her face on Thursday. She is now up and working with PT as of yesterday 5/12/14. She is making improvements every day! She is speaking and remembering and has her sense of humor. Her face and skull need time to heal, but she is doing very well. Mary (her Mother) is with her. Other family members are coming and going. Her  Father is back to work and her brother remains on Island in school. It will be several weeks before a decision is made on when Ellie and Mary will come back to the island. Thank you for your support! It is truly appreciated!
