In the early morning hours of November third, our friend Derek Lory had a random and senseless accident resulting in a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Friends and family discovered that Derek was without health insurance and after just the first day of treatment Derek was looking at thousands of dollars of debt. Derek is a compassionate community member and leader in Columbus, Ohio who brings enthusiasm and understanding towards every project or personal situation he encounters. He has spent the last several years of his life giving back his time to help feed hungry people through community gardening and partnerships with food pantries and community centers. He has spent his whole life dedicated to understanding people, nature and the need to build quality relationships in order to bring about positive changes wherever he goes. He is considered amongst friends old and new as a bearer of motivation and of laughter and we can’t wait to hear him joke again as he recovers from his TBI.
Within the first forty-eight hours after Derek’s accident, he had a tube inserted into his brain to control the build-up of cerebral fluid from the swelling of large brain bleeds. He made it past the crucial thirty-six hours point of survival and recently was taken off his breathing machine. Derek is beginning to recover slowly but is in need of more treatment and rehabilitation for several months to come. His medical costs are going to continue to rise and while friends are holding benefits concerts and dinners to help offset his astronomical medical expenses, community resources can only go stretch so far without the aide of health insurance or a more extensive community of givers. We think Derek deserves the right to recover from this horrific accident without being in financial debt for the rest of his life.
