The Story

Hi, my name is Alfie. My foster mom tells me I'm a very brave boy. You see, up until a month ago I lived in a backyard tied to an old van that was used as a dog house. One day I darted to the end of my chain and injured my neck so badly that I became paralyzed from the neck down. A wonderful vet at Scituate Animal Hospital in Rhode Island provided me with great medical care, and I soon regained control of my front legs and my bladder and bowels. Ugh, talk about a humiliating experience! Eventually, the caring hospital staff realized that I needed a loving home where I could continue my recovery, so they called GSRNE for help. Luckily there was a foster mom who is also a nurse who was eager to help me, and oh, I overheard her say I am very courageous and ridiculously cute. At this point, I am hobbling along with my sling, dependent on my foster mom for help with walking and pain control, hoping for an MRI that will give good news about my future, and then a little rehab to continue my path to wellness and a loving forever family. So could you please help me by donating what you can, no matter how small, and join GSRNE Facebook page to follow my story? Thank-you all for your love and support, Alfie

Fundraiser Updates

Thank-you everyone!  My MRI has been paid for and this would not be possible without all of YOU!  I am standing on my own but I am still very wobbly when I walk, so I'm still limited to what I am allowed to do.  But that's ok because I'm the happiest when my foster mom takes me for long drives and I can explore the world with my foster siblings.  Oh, did I mention that Dairy Queen and McDonald's are my favorite restaurants in the whole world?!

Next week I hope to see the neurologist again, and then I will update the plan for me.  But no matter what, I am very happy and incredibly grateful to be able to experience life as a cherished family member instead of a chained up backyard dog.

Hope to talk to you all again soon.  Big sloppy thank-you kisses and cyber hugs!

Hi everyone, thank you SO much for all your support. I do have an important update.  It was decided that I needed to have my MRI sooner rather than later, so as you can see in my latest pictures, it's now completed.  The bill came to exactly $1498.79 so GSRNE is only $600 away from being able to pay this particular bill.

The MRI showed that I have a ruptured disc consistent with snapping my neck when I ran to the end of my chain.  I was so sad living outside all alone for nine years but despite my misfortunate accident, I am now very happy surrounded by my GSRNE family and friends, as you can also see in my latest pictures.

The neurologist was very surprised to see how far I've come from being completely paralyzed in all four legs to now being able to stand in a wobbly fashion.  She told us that she wants to give me a few more weeks to see what kind of progress I can make on my own, and then she will advise on surgery.  GSRNE is currently facing more Vet visit bills and then possible surgery estimated to be $3500.  But they keep saying I am such a sweet boy that I deserve every chance possible to walk on my own again.  Hey, and I agree!!!

So thank-you again everyone for donating what you can as even the smallest donations help us reach our goal to help Alfie. And keep those well wishes coming!!!

Love, Alfie

Hi everyone, thank-you all for helping me get closer to find out what is wrong in my neck.  I'm glad the snow and ice is melted because it's so much easier for me to maneuver the sidewalks now.  Well, I see the sling on the table, that's my cue to get going.  Will check back on the weekend with some new photos of ME!

Alfie is doing well but he gets very bored in the house.  He perks right up now when he sees his sling coming because he knows its time for his walk.  Much easier now that the snow is melting.
