The Story

Eric Brown is a father, husband, brother, son, friend, colleague, psychiatrist, and teacher.

He also has ALS.

We already raised money to help make his home accessible.  Eric is now entering hospice care and could use some more help to cover the gaps in his insurance coverage.  So we've opened this up again and bumped up the goal.  Please help out.

Note that any funds raised in excess of the family's needs will be donated to the ALS Association.

We're in Eric's circle of friends, family, colleagues, and beyond -- and we raised $35,000 to make Eric and Lisa's home accessible to Eric as his disease progresses. We need your help now to help pay for in-home care not covered by insurance.

Fundraiser Updates

We've reopened this fundraiser, and here's why:

  • Eric qualifies for hospice care now, but this doesn't provide as much as you might think.
  • Their insurance doesn't cover in-home care -- no personal care assistant.
  • The work done to make their home accessible is completed and wonderful -- but without home care, it is way less helpful.
So: if you can donate now -- donate again -- find someone to donate -- please do.

We love you all.

We did it.

We did it, folks. We raised $35,000 to help Eric and Lisa get their house ready for the next steps in Eric's ALS.

Rhiannon and I put the fundraiser over the goal with an amount connected to 1650 Dayton Ave., the house in St. Paul where we all lived for various times (along with a bunch of other people).  And donations keep coming.

Nearly 300 people have donated so far, with contributions large and small. Lots of the donors were friends of Eric and Lisa's; many have never met either of them. Some gave in connection with the ice bucket thingy, most gave out of love for Eric and recognition of what an amazing person he is: father, husband, son, brother, doctor, friend.

If you'd still like to donate, I'm sure there will be ongoing costs that they'd welcome your help with. Or go give to ALSA to try to find a cure for this disease. It's a bastard.

Thank you, everyone who's given and spread the word. We love you.

Here's part of what Eric wrote after we reached $35,000:
In the midst of this horrible disease I've got, as I watch and feel myself getting steadily worse, I am always trying to keep my mind out of the dark places it could easily, and sometimes does, go. The past 7 weeks, and especially today, have given me a bright spot to live in for a while. I am amazed and touched by the caring and generosity of all those who have helped us fund our remodeling project and stay in our home. You did it. I will never forget it. I want to express my gratitude to everyone who contributed. Thank you.

Thank you, everyone who's given and spread the word. We love you.

Just a quick update -- we are just thrilled with the response to this effort.  It's been long-time friends of Eric's and Lisa's, but also people who have never met him.  Over 250 people have donated (averaging just over $100), with every single donation important and appreciated.  We're super close to the goal -- months before we expected to be -- and it just can't be said enough: Thank you.

Now, let's get it done.  They've started the work, based on what we've done so far.  Let's finish it.
