The Story

Sindhupalchowk District of Nepal has been the center of the after shocks hitting Nepal following the devastating April 25 earthquake.  I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Aiselukharka Village, Sindhupalchowk District, many years ago. (I am the author of The Two-Year Mountain, chronicling my experiences in Nepal.  And more recently, I competed the documentary, Searching For Nepal, about my return to Nepal, seeking my adopted family in the aftermath of the civil war.)  Since the earthquake, I have been in close contact with members of my family and the local communities in Sindhupalchowk.  They are in desperate need of supplies--tarps for shelter, medical supplies, food, building materials, pipe to rebuild the water system, etc.  I have already sent $1000 of my savings as a start.  They need much more.  These small villages have no monetary reserves.  I am able to send funds directly to Nepalis that I know and trust.  One family member, Nira Karmacharya, is organizing a group of Nepali university students to give assistance.  She says, "I'm going to Aiselukharka as soon as possible. We have formed a group here for rescuing and distributing foods and tents in Sindhupalchowk area. I will make sure that the donations are used properly for everyone's benefit."  Your donation will be used at the grass roots level to make a true difference.  Thank you!!

Anyone in the Salinas, CA area is invited to a benefit screening of Searching For Nepal on Sunday, May 17.  Send me a message for details.

I'm still monitoring conditions in Aiselukharka. I hear regularly from the two granddaughters, Jesika and Nira, plus information from the son, Surendra, who took tarps and other materials up to the village the week before last.  They are waiting to use the money that I have already sent until they have enough to build temporary shelters for everyone in the village.  I have collected another $2300 (partly from last week's benefit screening and partly from on-line donations) that I will be sending this week.  They had a big storm two nights ago that blew away many of the tarps they had been using for shelter.  Monsoon season is coming.

We've just completed a benefit screening of the documentary, Searching For Nepal, which brought in about $1200.

Last night, I was in contact with Nira in Kathmandu.  She says that the elders in Aiselukharka have decided to not use any of the money sent until they have enough to benefit all of the families in the village.  Their priority is to build temporary shelters for everyone.  That's about 35 shelters at $150 to $200 each.  More money is needed.  Help if you can.  Pass the word.  Thanks!
