The Story

If I showed you a light pink ribbon, you'd probably think of breast cancer. We see it everywhere, from socks to sweatshirts. But have you ever heard of Inflammatory Breast Cancer?

You're not the only one. This type of breast cancer is pretty darn nasty (not that any cancers are nice). By the time you find out that it is cancer...specifically Inflammatory Breast are already at Stage 3 diagnosis.

I was first diagnosed with Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC) three years ago.  I started with a very aggressive treatment of chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, and radiation. I thought I was all set to go…but a year later the cancer returned.  I have been on several treatments since the reoccurrence. Every time a treatment seems to work…a few weeks later it is ineffective. I am at one of those points again and need a focus to keep my thoughts and feelings positive and to be able to be active in the eradication of this disease. I don’t have control over the cancer, but I do have control over how I respond to the way it affects my life…and hopefully improve the quality of life for other patients affected by this cancer.

This fundraiser is to help build awareness and raise needed funds for research to help find a cure for Inflammatory Breast Cancer.

100% of the money that you donate will go towards Inflammatory Breast Cancer Research at Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

We appreciate any amount you are able to donate. Every little bit helps us get closer to our goal. Please help us spread the word to people who would like to support this endeavor and life-changing journey for so many people affected by Inflammatory Breast Cancer.

Fundraiser Updates

Hey Folks...The CT scan showed that the liver is looking good, but the medication is no longer working...The cancer is spreading across my chest and fluid is back in my right lung...this is so hard to talk about...staying strong but sometimes I feel pretty tired...I will be starting a new clinical study in two weeks that is using the combination of two drugs...Ruxolitinib (which is a newly discovered drug that has been shown to block a pathway that may stop cancer cells from growing) along with Taxol (chemotherapy drug).  First, I need to get the lung drained and the bones scanned...clear the old drug out of my system...then carry on...This study was partly funded by the money that all of you have donated!!!!  THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR LOVE AND SUPPORT!!!

Hello...Sorry it's been so long since I've updated everyone...I had a check-up today at Dana Farber...the medication that I have been taking has become less's noticeable on my chest, but where the cancer was previously it still looks good.  I am feeling great...staying active with music, family, and friends...Dr. Overmoyer is looking into other drug studies that are available...good things are on the horizon!!  My daughter Sami and I made the final donation to Dr. Overmoyer to help fund research for knocking the crap out of Inflammatory Breast Cancer.  She and her staff is so grateful and are ready to put the funds into action.  THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR LOVE AND SUPPORT!!!!

Just got back from Dana Farber...the scans were great!  Most of the tumors were the same or a little bit smaller. There was an additional one found in my right lung, but not really of concern at this I am thrilled that cancer is staying put and so am I!!!  Thank you again for all your prayers and words of encouragement...Helen

Great day at Dana Farber...the tumors have reduced in size by about 30% and there are no new tumors!!  Side effects are a little too much so Dr. Overmoyer is keeping me off the anti-cancer medication for about a week and then I will begin taking it at a lower dose...I am so grateful for this good news and for all the love and support from everyone!!!  With love,  Helen

It's been six weeks since I have been on this new seems to still be working...bothersome side effects...but it's worth it!  Tomorrow I go to Dana Farber for my scans...a CAT scan (neck, chest, and abdomen) and a bone scan.  I get the results on Monday, so I'll keep everyone updated.
