When Ian was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes last June, we were all in shock. Not only did we not understand why this happened, we wondered if there was anything that could have been done to avoid it. The doctors were kind and assured us that nothing could have been done to avoid it. Type 1 Diabetes just sort of happens. There are many studies that are trying to figure out why diabetes happens.
I, his mother, knew very little about diabetes. I have learned so much over the past year but I am sure I still have a lot to learn. It hurts me seeing him struggle with it. His freedom to eat as he wants to has been taken away from him. I can only hope that he will choose to be more health conscious with his food. He is a teenager so it is a little more difficult.
Ian for the most part has learned how to take care of himself but I see that some times he slips behind; forgetting to check his blood sugar or to give himself his needed shot of insulin. He struggles with why this had to happen to him. He feels like a part of his childhood has been robbed. And for these reasons, Ian needs to go to Diabetes Camp. He needs to see that he is not alone. There are many other kids that also have Type 1 Diabetes. They can share their stories, give each other tips, and to learn how to not let it get the better of themselves. Life can go on and manage diabetes at the same time.
I would like for Ian to make it to Diabetes Camp so he can start the healing process. Any amount you can donate will be very much appreciated.
