The Story

My name is Grant Nawoichyk and I am a Life Scout from Boy Scout Troop 23 at West Point. I am currently planning my Eagle Project and I am seeking donations of some or all of the materials required to carry out my project. “The Trail of the Fallen” is a memorial dedicated to those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to our Nation. This informal memorial was started in early 2002 for service members killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. The project will formally recognize the trail with the Palisades Interstate Park Trail System, clearly mark the trail for hikers, provide two reflection areas at the trails end and QR codes which give hikers information on patriots who have given their life in the defense of our great Nation.

My Eagle project will be to formalize “The Trail of the Fallen” and to rehabilitate the Torne Trail which is part of the Palisades Interstate Park Trail System and the 1777 Trail. The project has four main components which include placing an information kiosk at the trail head, two granite reflection benches at the memorial at the end of the end of the Trail of the Fallen, placing virtual tombstones on the benches, as well as blazing of the trail. This project takes place on Mine Torne Road near Bear Mountain, New York. I would like to begin executing my project at the end of March and complete it by mid-April 2014.

My total fundraising goal is $5,000. The total estimated cost of supplies and materials for the project is $4,200. The additional $800 will be provided to the Parks Commission for future upkeep and maintenance of the trail. I am very grateful for any assistance you can provide me towards completing my Eagle Project. Your support and encouragement is deeply appreciated. Thank you so very much for your time.

I was out at Bear Mountain today making planning measurements on the kiosk near the Ice Rink. I hope the snow melts so I am able to break ground on my timeline. I can't believe how much snow is still on the ground!

I am very lucky to have had several people volunteer to help me with technical expertise. That is so cool! I am looking to start my project on 29 MARCH and complete it on 30 MARCH. Thank you again to all of my supporters!

Today, 20 FEB 2014, marks the 3rd anniversarry of 1LT Daren Hidalgo (USMA Class of 2009) being KIA in Mama Kiriz, Afghanistan. On the first anniversary of his death, we did a butterfly release, this year as I am preparing for the final benches to be approved, I remember what Daren's father told me about how much Daren loved the Hudson Valley and I am more motivated to get started on my project. Daren was truly a special person to me. He was a son, brother and amazing friend! I join his family today, in remembering Daren and knowing three years later, the pain is not any less from his loss.

I shared with you that there will be two reflection benches, the other is for MAJ Thomas 'TK' Kennedy. He was a son, brother, husband, father and my friend. I cannot measure how his loss has changed my life; I only know that it will never be the same. I heard someone say once that it is our responsibility to make sure that their sacrifice are not in vain. This is my motivation to remember my friends and all of our Nations fallen patriots.

Both Daren and Tommy had their lives cut short too soon. I hope to make their families very proud by adding to the legacy they have left behind and show anyone who stops by the "Trail of the Fallen" the way they have touched my life.

New York has had nothing but snow, ice and rain for months. Today, the sun is out and shinning very brightly. Daren and Tommy rest in peace at the West Point Cemetery and I am very lucky to be able to visit my friends and be reminded of the real life heroes I know.

Thank you so much for all of the support and encouragement I have received with my Eagle Scout Project! With online and mailed in donations, I have been able to achieve my fundraising goal of $5,000.00

I am in the process of approving the bench design. In addition, I am working hard on the kiosk plans - which will be the most challenging portion of the project. Hopefully the 3 feet of snow the Hudson Valley has gotten will be melted by 29 MARCH so I can start my project as scheduled!
