The Story

There is a boy in China who has never had a family for his entire 9 years. That’s unless the “aunts” who take care of him would be considered family, or unless the orphans who have come and gone over the last 9 years would be considered family. His paperwork states, “he has been questioned extensively about his desire to be adopted. He has expressed multiple times…he wants to be adopted.” He is a “special needs” child who has been stuck waiting for a family.

It is now the desire of our family to be his family; the family he has desired for so many years!

We have three sons and one daughter (adopted from Ethiopia two years ago). Our lives have been enormously blessed by being a family to someone who had no family that we’re doing it all over again.

The Chinese government has granted us preliminary approval. We now have a limited time to meet the process requirements.

Unfortunately adoption is very costly! We are confident that with personal sacrifice and the help of our family and friends, these costs will be covered to bring our son home.

Please consider joining us with financial support as we step out in obedience to God. We would be humbled if you would give any amount…$50, $100, $500, $1000, or more. Our fundraising goal is $20,000 of the $32,000 total. If 400 people each give $50; 200 each gave $100, etc.

Here are examples that you would be giving toward:
• $ 200 Adoptive Parent Training
• $7,450 Children’s House International Agency Fees
• $1,500 China Government Adoption Fee
• $5,600 China Third Party Fees
• $1,300 US Government Fees
• $6,100 Home Study, Dossier Preparation, Reporting
• $6,600 Travel Airfare and Lodging
• $2,000 Travel In-Country Transportation and Coordination

Fundraiser Updates

Since our last update we have been fingerprinted, received approval from the USCIS to adopt a child, had the necessary 13 documents authenticated (confirming notaries are valid) by the State of Illinois, then couriered the 13 documents through the China Consulate for their certification. Although all this fits neatly into one string of events captured in one sentence, it took so much energy, patience and perseverance to get to this point!

Here are a couple highlights:
>While waiting for the USCIS approval I learned to "alert" when I hear the mail truck blocks away. I even resorted to stalking the mailman by finding him on his route to get our mail early because I was sure our USCIS approval was coming
>When the documents went to the State of Illinois only 12 could be authenticated because the notary stamp on our home study document was invalid. This led to an additional trip from Chicago to Aurora for a new document to the south side of Chicago for a new notary stamp and back to central Chicago to get the notary. In the course of two days my sister and I pursued documents and authentication for 13 hours...whew.

All that and more culminated in a completely notarized, authenticated and certified dossier (the packet of documents required by China for review and approval)! This is being reviewed by our agency is expected to be shipped to China on Monday, May 18th!!!

In adoption terminology we will have reached the milestone DTC (Dossier To China)!!!

Next up...receiving a letter from the Chinese government called Letter Seeking Conformation (LSC) which is the formal agreement to match us with Ling (privacy name Bjorn). We expect this about mid-July (hoping sooner)!

My focus has turned from a paper chase to the face of that boy who will be home this fall! Time to start getting serious about learning some key phrases in Chinese!!

Thanks all! Please share our fundraising page with others :)

With my last update on February 3rd, I mentioned that the next step was to submit our application to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services for their approval for us to adopt. I am ecstatic to say, "the packet was sent via FedEx today!"

I have changed the featured photo for our fundraising page in celebration of this milestone!

Next up...getting a fingerprint appointment date from USCIS. We expect the appointment to be about 3-4 weeks from now so we'll reset the "clock" for this step of the process and wait to hear something!

Thank you for all your support and staying with us through this journey!

It has been quite a month in our adoption journey! Although we had anticipated our home study to be final and approved it has just gone to the State of Illinois Dept of Child and Family Services for approval. So it goes with adoption...hurry and wait for the paperwork and approvals. Our experience in our first adoption taught us that timing is truly up to God and He knows best so we are reminding ourselves of this whenever we get impatient.

Next up, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services application for approval to adopt from China. We get to get our fingerprints taken again...yea!

Excited to have ordered a book written by an adoptive family so we can learn key phrases to help us get through those first few weeks! It even inlcudes a CD so we can practice pronunciation...should be fun!

Last but not least, THANK YOU HUGE to all who have supported us financially and encouraged us!! Words cannot express...
