On Sunday, October 28th, I will be participating in the 5k run at Massapequa Park to raise funds for Amyloidosis research. I am new to running and this will be my first race. In February 2011, my mother Renu Kumar, was diagnosed with Primary Amyloidosis, a rare blood disorder. In May 2011, she received high dose chemotherapy and stem cell transplantation at the Boston Amyloid Treatment and Research Program under the care of Dr. Vaishali Sanchorawala. Currently she is in near complete remission. Amyloidosis is a rare disease which results from a misfolding of proteins that causes deposits of amyloid fibrils in tissues and organs, impairing their function. At this time, there is no cure, but research and treatment are greatly extending the lives of patients. Please join me in helping fund research that will help newly diagnosed patients, those starting treatment, and find a cure for amyloidosis.
