On December 9, 2011, Charles McCorkle passed into eternity. He was one of the first veterans pictured on this military tribute quilt. He once told me that during his time serving in WWII, his mother sent him packages of food and he shared it with others. Today, I read a card from his wife and him that I received several years ago at the beginning of this project. Inside the card, a donation was included to cover the cost of the first care package for this fundraiser. The card still brings tears to my eyes. Part of it reads:

“What a wonderful thing you are doing. Sure it will bring a lot of people much joy. Would love to see the finished project. Hoping you have it (center painting) made into postcards. God bless you for the things you are doing for the Vets and Soldiers. In God's Love, Charles & Marie McCorkle.”

After hundreds of hours of research, hundreds of individuals such as Mr. McCorkle's help, around four years of collecting pictures and signatures along with painting and sewing, the Military Tribute Quilt is FINALLY completed! In the center is a painting honoring those who served from WWII to the present. This painting is surrounded by 58 photos and signatures of veterans who previously served or who sacrificed their lives. My hope is that this team project will visually honor those who served and sacrificed in the past while encouraging support for those currently serving!

Partnering with Soldiers' Angels during the next few months (May 26 - May 2015) our goal is to raise $10,500. This will enable Soldiers' Angels to send 350 military care packages for an average of $30 each including postage. In memory of Charles McCorkle who was unable to see the finished quilt, for every $250 or more that you donate, Soldiers' Angels will print and send ten postcards featuring the center painting to you. Also a print of the painting will be included in each care package.

Would you consider helping us reach our goal? Would you consider making a difference in the lives of those serving by making a donation for care packages?

To make an online donation to Soldiers' Angels, please click on the “Give Now” button near the top right of this page and follow the directions. To donate by mail, please send to the following address and make all checks payable to Soldiers Angels:

3964 W. 700 S.; Rushville, IN 46173

To see and take pictures of the quilt, please visit the Indiana War Memorial Museum (see http://www.in.gov/iwm/2333.htm ). They have graciously offered to display the quilt in a beautiful mahogany case along with the original painting in their main lobby from Memorial Day through May 2015.

In closing, I would like to say thank you to every American veteran and service member on this quilt and around the world who has served, sacrificed and many times given their lives. Without their help, support and courage this project would not be possible!

Thank you especially to my Dad and others in my family, who served, for being the first inspiration behind this project. Thank you James McCauley, Jay Ashurst, Michael Fletcher, The Stokes Collection and Reuters for allowing me to use your pictures or paintings as visual references for my painting. Thank you Kristi Witek, Andrew Thomas, Olivia Atherton and Deborah Osborne for taking pictures. Thank you Hannah Atherton, Kate Osborne, & Queen Ann Custom Services for all of your help sewing. Also to countless others who helped make this project possible or who will donate or continue to help in any way on this project - on behalf of those who sacrifice so much, thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Sincerely,  Grace Atherton

Note: All funds exceeding our goal of $10,500 will go toward additional carepackages!

When I first received this email several years ago, I never thought I would be sharing it! I had signed up to send care-packages/letters to a deployed soldier through Soldiers' Angels, got contact information and started sending care-packages. I hadn't heard from my adopted soldier, but I knew our military was busy, so I just continued to mail care-packages/letters. Then one day I received this email:

HELLO GRACE, I'M CARVELL LOCKETT. I'M EMAILING YOU TO SAY THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU HAVE DONE FOR ME THIS DEPLOYMENT. I NEVER EXPECTED TO RECEIVE SO MANY LETTERS AND GOODIES. THERE WERE SO MANY TIMES THAT I SHOWED UP AT WORK AND JUST DIDN'T FEEL LIKE DOING ANYTHING BUT WOULD HAVE A LETTER/CARE-PACKAGE FROM YOU AND AFTER READING MY WHOLE ATTITUDE WOULD CHANGE. YOU SOUND LIKE A VERY BEAUTIFUL PERSON THAT TOOK THE TIME TO MAKE MY DAYS AND DEPLOYMENT BETTER AND I'M THANKFUL. ATTACHED IS A RANDOM PICTURE OF ME DOING DAILY THINGS SO U CAN PUT A FACE WITH THE NAME.

YOUR SOLDIER AND FRIEND
SGT CARVELL LOCKETT

This email made me cry and encouraged me to finish the Military Tribute Quilt to raise money with others to send care-packages. Today that project is completed. But we only have 37 days left to reach our goal of $10,500. We have already raised over $1500 (37 care-packages at $30 so far) and more along the lines of $3000 including pledges. Would you consider being a part of this project to send a care-package(s) today through Soldiers' Angels. Would you consider making a donation to send a care-package to someone who may never have the opportunity to say thank you, but that needs your support? No donation is too small or too big.

Recently while getting permission to use the above email, Mr. Lockett said the following: “it truly was great receiving a care package, just the small things can help you get through the hardest times in life.”

Thank you ahead of time for taking time to encourage and make a difference for those just like Mr. Lockett who who put everything on the line everyday!

I hope everyone has a Happy Father's Day! As tomorrow approaches, I think about how amazing my Dad is in so many ways, including his service in the Marine Corps which was a huge inspiration behind this military tribute quilt. Also I am reminded of everyone on this quilt who is a Father or whose service cost them their life and chance at being a father or the opportunity to raise their own children. We appreciate your service and we remember you!

A quick update: Three weeks into this project we are at over $400 in donations and $600 in pledged donations (around $1000). I am humbled at the support and encouragement we have received! Thank you to each person who has taken time to financially remember those in our military through donating toward care packages. Your support is crucial in reminding those who have served or who are serving that they are not alone, and that we remember and appreciate their sacrifice!
