Matthew Hegeman touched the lives of many people, always inspiring confidence, providing laughter, and focusing on what was important in the moment.

As a mountain guide, his humor, generosity of spirit, and emphasis on safety above all things gave climbers confidence and assurance to tackle the challenges before them. He was an amazing teacher, a careful guide, and a true friend. We are deeply saddened by the loss of his life in an avalanche while guiding on the Liberty Ridge of Mount Rainier.

Matt leaves behind his wife and love, Ericka Hegeman, who with incredible strength must continue forward – following their dreams and embracing Matt's encouragement to fill her life with what is most meaningful.

It is hard to imagine losing the most important person in your life, but you can help Ericka through this incredibly challenging time with your gift.  Every dollar will help to cover expenses Ericka is facing due to this tragic loss.

We thank you for your incredible generosity and will keep Matt in our hearts - remembering his smile, laughter, and gentle encouragement to keep moving forward.

I am so overwhelmed by the kindess and generosity of each person who has donated money. Thank you so incredibly much for helping me through this difficult time. I was recently informed that the search for Matt (and the other two climbers) who remain on the mountain has ended for the year. It seems very likely that Matt will always remain on the mountain. Please think of him every time you look at Mount Rainier.
Love,
Ericka
