Alex Vargas (Berrien Springs), husband of Nereida and father of Nerialex and Rose Vargas passed away suddenly from heart complications on Sunday, October 27, 2013 at Lakeland Healthcare in St. Joseph, MI. Alex, a former pastor, was well loved by many and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

Alex and Nereida made the decision to leave their home in Puerto Rico and come to the Andrews University area over 10 years ago to provide a better life for their girls. They both worked hard to send their daughters through Christian education at Village SDA Elementary School, Andrews Academy, and currently, Andrews University. Nerialex (Senior) and Rose (PT, Second Year) survive their father along with their mother, Nereida, former staff.

Alex's health began to decline several years ago as he faced increasing heart complications. He eventually gave up his job to focus on his health and could often be found taking walks hand-in-hand with his beloved wife, Nereida, on the Andrews University campus.

With all of that being said, the Vargas family needs our support. Please continue to lift them up in prayer and in encouragement during this difficult time. They also need our support financially. Although they would never ask for themselves, friends of the family have created this site in order to provide opportunities for others to help the family in a very practical way-- by aiding them financially as they face funeral expenses and other medical bills.

Whether it is $5 or $500, every gift makes a difference and will help lessen the financial load during this difficult time.

Thank you so much for your continued support of the Vargas family and we look forward to the day when we will see Alex again.

Update: GOAL REACHED!

After 43 hours of facebook shares, tweets, and 107 donors, our goal of $5000 has been met and even exceeded by $2 :).

What a fitting phrase by Isaac Suh, the final donor-- "We did it."

And we truly did. By God's grace, by anonymous donors, by friends and family, by former teachers and staff, by former classmates and current classmates, by complete strangers, and by those who are suffering a loss themselves, the Vargas family no longer needs to worry about the financial burden of burying their beloved husband and father.

Thank you so much for your generosity through acts of service, prayers, words of encouragement, and monetary contributions. It's amazing to see the community come together as one to meet the needs of one of its own.

As a donor has asked, "Why should we stop here? Should we not continue giving beyond our goal of $5000?" And our answer is "Yes, yes, a hundred times yes!" The $5000 goal was a minimum to cover funeral expenses. If anyone would like to continue to help the family beyond those expenses, then by all means, give on! We're sure the family would greatly benefit from any and all contributions as they begin this new chapter of their life.

Continue to keep the Vargas family in your prayers and we remind you that you are all invited to the funeral (1pm) and viewing services (11am-1pm) this Friday, November 1 at Pioneer Memorial Church's Youth Chapel.

Blessings and thanks to you all,

- The Organizers

"And my God will supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:19

Update: Within 24 hours, 71.4% of the goal of $5000 has been reached...
We are speechless.

"Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen." - Ephesians 3:20, 21

All glory be to God. Thank you all so much for allowing God to use you in such powerful ways.
