Jumaane Stewart suffered a fatal heart attack at 39 years old on July 30, 2013, leaving his wife Michelle without a loving husband and their two beautiful children without a father.
Jumaane was a devoted husband and father to N'Kosi, two years old, and Nandi, five months. Beyond the love and warmth he offered his family, Jumaane gave of himself selflessly and tirelessly to his long-lasting friendships, his community and his work. Jumaane was on the board of the Bedford Stuyvesant YMCA. He was a proud and active member of the New York Coalition of Black Architects. He taught and mentored students his whole life—from being a camp counselor as a teen to being an instructor at the Pratt Institute’s Center for Continuing and Professional Studies. Jumaane's reach was great and impossible to measure. He touched each life he encountered, and his radiant, ever-ready smile drew all people toward him.
The outpouring of love and support for Jumaane's family has been immense, but the future will be extremely challenging for Michelle and her babies. While we cannot bring Jumaane back, we can do what he would have done—help secure a bright future for his wife, his son and his infant daughter.
Please, let's come together and alleviate some of the financial burden of Jumaane's tragic and untimely passing. All contributions will go directly to Michelle to help offset funeral costs and to help her move forward while raising her children without Jumaane by her side.
