My cousin Jessica Rocafort suffered severe burns from the neck down after a grill explosion in January 2013. She was in the ICU for three months, and even though she is now home, her recovery continues. She has a long road ahead of her but the most pressing problem is that the prolonged intubation resulted in vocal cord paralysis on the left side and subglottic stenosis with acute airway obstruction. All of this means she cannot speak or breathe on her own.

Worst of all, Jessica's doctors in Florida did not hold much hope that she would ever be well enough to remove her tracheostomy tube. Thankfully, after much research Jessica's family found a doctor in New York City's St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital who is willing to perform the series of life-changing laser surgeries she needs.

Even though Jessica has health insurance, it does not cover all of the travel, surgical and recovery expenses, which exceed $32,000. We are asking your help in making the surgeries possible so that Jessica can resume a normal life and be a mom to her two little girls.

Donations in any amount are welcome. Thank you!

PS: We have been asked about donations not in the US. For anyone outside the US who wishes to contribute, you can do so via PayPal. Jessica's PayPal account is surgeryforjessica@gmail.com. Thank you!

Dear friends,
Thank you for continuing to support Jessica. Your donations and specially your kind words mean so much.

We wanted to let you know that Jessica's surgery had to be postponed until July. All the money for the surgery is not there yet, and because the family is looking at other funding sources such as foundations and organizations, it takes longer to not only secure the funds but also to finalize the agreements between the organizations and the hospital.

As you can imagine, Jessica is extremely frustrated because she was really looking forward to the surgery as the first step in the process. Even though July is around the corner, it's not easy to keep waiting when you're in such a difficult situation, but she's hanging in there.

In a bad news/good news scenario, Jessica's doctor in New York found out that her vocal cords are actually not paralyzed as she was initially diagnosed, which is great, but her airway is 100% blocked when initially doctors thought there was some air getting through. So the procedure is going to be slightly different and she is going to have a permanent tube inserted into her throat to begin expanding the airway. It's going to be a long road-- she still has to undergo surgery to expand the skin in her neck that will eventually allow her to move her head, as well as plastic surgery in her lower face-- but Jessica is young and strong and wants to get better.

Thank you again for your continued support, and please keep those prayers coming!

Queridos amigos:
