It is with great relief to announce the ending of Shannon's battle with neurofibromatosis Type 2. Shannon went home today [February 14, 2014] surrounded by her wonderful family and some close friends. Shannon now has a new body without any tumors, pain, or discouragement. She died peacefully in her sleep. Shannon wants us all to have the courage to continue without her and wants us to know that she is enjoying her life now. Please continue to pray for my family and friends as we mourn the loss of our wonderful loved ones. Please stay tuned for funeral arrangements as they will be announced sometime next week.

From Sister, Rachel: http://www.shmesolution.com/2013/10/20/for-shannon/

When Shannon was just 5 years old she underwent her first surgery because of a genetic disorder called Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2, for short). Over the next 20 years she has undergone an additional 20 surgeries including 5 brain surgeries. The disorder causes benign tumors to grow throughout her body from just inside the skin to deep inside the brain and spinal cord. NF2 has left her with no hearing and many other weaknesses. There is one major strength within her; it is her desire to persevere. She continues to want to get better and to be able to do things to help others. On October 6, 2012 she married Charles Wachal and the two enjoyed the first year of their marriage. During this time she also gave birth to their wonderful daughter Abigail Grace. She is a sweet 6 month old now. Deep inside Shannon much was changing however and after two MRIs they have determined that her tumors in her brain have grown significantly. Shannon had 80-90% blockage in her c2 vertebrae which was causing major weakness in her body. On their first anniversary, Charles sat by her side and prayed, as she slept in ICU. She had surgery for that spinal tumor in October 2013, however more testing has revealed other growing tumors, major weakness, headaches, recent inability to keep down food and other significant symptoms. Shannon and Charles have a good life together but financially this will be a major burden for them to bare. The cost of traveling to and from hospital stays, surgeries, recovery, and follow-ups will be enormous along with the living expenses, and for Abigail’s care.

Any donation would be greatly appreciated.

I feel so much connection and desire to help my dear friend, as I too have the same disorder, NF2, which also took my hearing; however I am blessed to be in better physical health, at this time. I have done a LOT of fundraising over recent years, for NF awareness and medical research... but I have not before now set a single goal to help one very good friend.

Please support Shannon, as she strives to be the healthy mommy she has always  dreamed of being!

SHARE to HELP a husband see his wife's dying words...
A Wayne County man lost his 26 year old wife on Valentine’s Day a lifelong battle with a terminal illness. Knowing her time was near; she left private videos on her Facebook account for her husband and her baby daughter.

The problem: Facebook locked her account when she died, and now her widow cannot view those precious messages. We will be airing his story with Facebook’s response tonight at 5 & 6 - but we think if we SHARE their story now- it might get Facebook’s attention…

UPDATE, Friday, 2/14/14...

Today on Valentine's day we face many decisions that are hard for this family please share this as it is an important update. As many of you know Shannon has had NF2 for a number of years. She has undergone many many surgeries to try and save her life. Shannon is looking forward to a wonderful new body in heaven one day. That day may be sooner then many of us would like to say. Shannon is very weak after surgery and her body is not responding well to treatment. She has also developed a pretty good case of Pneumonia in the last few days that is not responding to treatment either. It has been a very difficult week with many decisions to make. After talking with Shannon and her doctors we have decided to admit Shannon into hospice. Her doctors have discussed with us that Shannon will not be able to recover and at this point she is so weak that even if we wanted her to go home to continue treatment she likely would not even be able to live at home. She may only have a few days to a month or so to live at the current rate of tumor issues along with the general weakness that Shannon is in. This has been a very tough decision and one that hurts me to say that we had to make. If you wish to visit Shannon by all means do so. Please coordinate with me before doing that so that I may be able to make sure that she is able to have visitors when you want to come. Please continue to pray for my wife but more importantly for my family as this has been very difficult so far and will only continue to be so. Thank you for everyone who has helped us out both financially and with their time when they just was there for us. If you wish to continue to help us out during this very difficult time please do so by clicking on the link below. Shannon may not be with us much longer but I promise you her impact will be here for decades to come. She is a wonderful women, wife, and mother I just hope I can be half a dad as she is a mom for our daughter.

UPDATE, Thursday, 2/13/14...

PLEASE SHARE THE GOOD NEWS!!!!! Shannon is now of of the ventilator and breathing on her own. This is the first of many steps to get Shannon home. Shannon is on a trach collar which is giving her oxygen while she takes breaths her own. Please continue to pray as we have a lot to do to get to the point that she can go home. Also thank you to all who have donated to my wife and I during this difficult time.

We really need to raise more donations and are working to improve this page. Please share this with your family and friends. Charles has not left her side and they really need our help, no matter what happens. If we raise more than is needed to pay off medical bills, the rest will be placed in a trust for Abigail's college education. Thank you to all donors!  - Anne Noble

The following updates in this post were written by Shannon's husband, Charles Wachal. Follow her FB page at: https://www.facebook.com/ShannonWachalMOM

UPDATE, Wednesday, 2/12/14...

Update.... Shannon has made a lot of progress today but she has also took some steps backwards today. She was able to get off of the amnesia medication today which is a huge step forward. She has developed a very high fever of around 102-102.5. Her heart rate is also now Tachy (over 110) with peaks around 140. They have ruled out major conditions that would cause this. They are treating her for infections to prevent any major problems. Please continue to pray so that they find out what the problem is.

UPDATE, Tuesday, 2/11/14...

Shannon is now out of surgery. It was successful and the trach is in. She is still on a ventilator. Her heart rate is pretty high right now but they said it should come down on its own over time. They plan on beginning to reduce the medication throughout the day tomorrow and hopefully will have a more lucid Shannon as a result. We still have many decisions to make in regards to the future so please continue to pray for us.

UPDATE, Tuesday, 2/11/14...

Shannon is now in surgery.

UPDATE, Monday, 2/10/14...

Update.. Shannon's surgery has been postponed due to unknown reasons. It should happen later today or tomorrow. I will let everyone know when she will be going down into the OR room.

UPDATE, Sunday, 2/9/14...

Please pray for us as surgery has been scheduled tomorrow afternoon. They will take her to the OR and then remove the breathing tube and then will see if there is any breathing on her own and if not then they will put in a trac to allow her to breath. More updates to follow.

UPDATE, Saturday, 2/8/14....

This has been a difficult situation that we have found ourselves in but yet it has been so satisfying to see all of the support we have from everyone so thank you. Shannon will likely be undergoing surgery on monday to put in a tracheotomy to allow her to breath on her own. She will likely not have much of a voice if any voice after the surgery. The plan right now is to get her airway secure, allow her to recover from both surgeries, then we will go to rehab, and then after about a month from now she will start the experimental drug "Avastin". This medication has to work otherwise there are no other options.

They are trying to keep Shannon as comfortable as possible which is hard considering she has a tube in her mouth but they are trying their best. We continue to ask for prayers. Thank you for everyone who has donated to the fundraiser for Shannon and I over the past few days and we continue to ask for additional funds to help cover costs associated with Shannon's care. If anyone would like to come and visit Shannon they are more then welcome to. Please understand she is in ICU so there are a number of very sick patients around her. Please contact me before coming to get details about her.

SURGERY DID NOT GO AS PLANNED:

Update... Please share with everyone so that they have an update on the surgery today. Shannon's surgery did not go as planned today. The surgeon had to stop early due to the amount of risks associated with the tumor removal. The tumor is wrapped up in many arteries and nerves that could cause death and other major problems if he removes any more of the tumor. He was only able to remove a very small portion of the tumor and it will not cause any resolution of her symptoms.

After surgery was complete Shannon was having some wheezing and shortness of breath in the recovery room but it was not severe so they moved her to a step down room (has a lot of the ICU monitoring without the ICU feel) when she got there they suctioned some fluid out of her lungs and her mouth. When they went to do it a second time she started to code and her O2 level dropped to 59%. Immediately they contacted the rapid response team and began to bring her back. They have now intubated her and sedated her and moved her to ICU where she is right now.

The issue we have discovered is that she has paralyzed vocal cords due to the surgery. The plan is to use steroids to see if the vocal cords will come back. She is on a ventilator and will have to remain on it until the swelling comes down and if she is still unable to breath on her own then a trakiatomy may be required so she can breath through her throat. They also have a feeding tube inserted to help keep her nutrients taken care of. She does have the ability to follow simple signing commands and knows who everyone is. She was unable to vocalize before they intubated but was able to whisper. We ask for your prayers during this very difficult time. We also know that Shannon will now be in the hospital for a while (weeks). We continue to ask for your support for us to help us out with the financial situation that we now find ourselves in.

SHANNON'S BRAIN SURGERY 2-6-14:

Shannon will be going into surgery tomorrow morning. The arrival time in the morning is 6:15 AM (means we have to get up at 4:30 especially with the snow still falling ughhh). The surgery will be starting at 8:30 AM and will be approx 10-12 hours long. Shannon will likely be in ICU over the weekend. She will likely be sedated and on a ventilator for 1-2 days following surgery due to how long the surgery will be and the amount of contact this tumor has with the brain stem. She may need a blood transfusion tomorrow however they are no longer a large risk with these so we are not concerned. Shannon's mother arrived today without any problem in spite of the winter storm. Please pray for all of us tomorrow for both nerves and success with the surgery. Please keep in prayer Shannon, Shannon's mom, Dale, Teresa, Abigail, and Charles throughout the day tomorrow. If you wish to visit Shannon we ask that you first contact Charles to make sure that there are no conflicts with your visiting but we do welcome visits. Thanks for all of the recent support on the fundraiser and for all of the prayers.

SHANNON HAD A GOOD DAY ... CHARLES'S BIRTHDAY.... Shannon had a good day today. She was awake for a good 6 hours this afternoon which is way up from the previous 2-3 hours. We know not everyday will be this good of a day but we are thankful when we have good days. Please continue to keep Feb 6 in prayer as we prepare for the major surgery. Also if you are new to this site Anne (also one of our Admin's) has recently started a fundraiser for my wife and I to help with costs of her care and if you would be wiling to help out I would greatly appreciate it. TWO UPCOMING SURGERIES:

Update: Shannon visited the neurosurgeon today. They have determined that there is at least 2 surgeries that she will need to have very soon. One is the brain surgery to remove the 5+ cm from her left side of the brain and then the other is to remove a large tumor from the lower portion of her spine. Surgery for the brain tumor is scheduled for February 6 and then the other surgery on her spine will be done around a month later or early to mid march. This surgery has a very high risk involved and so we ask that you continue to pray for us. Shannon's health has continued to decline day after day and we are looking forward to allowing the Lord to work through the surgeons hands on Feb 6. Please pray for the peace to accept whatever the Lord's will for Shannon may be that day even if it is not what we want. Shannon will likely not be able to come home between the 2 surgeries. She will likely be in the hospital and then in rehab and then back to the hospital for the next surgery.

BACK TO HOSPITAL... POSSIBLE SURGERY... DONATIONS (and prayer) NEEDED:

Shannon was in the hospital again today. Shannon has really started to have some major neurological changes this week. She has been sleeping all the time and when she is awake she is either very confused or she has uncontrollable crying and anxiety. I took her to the hospital this morning after it got to the point that she didn't 100% of the time know where she was. We were out this morning on one place and she thought we were at the doctor's office. After doing some tests and neurology coming and seeing her they wanted to admit her. After having a discussion with her personal neurologist about the idea and plan (the one that knows NF2 very well). She told us that she thinks its best to go home today and meet with the neurosurgeon that we were already planning on meeting with tomorrow. She is going to meet us there to evaluate Shannon and determine what needs to be done. She said that if we were admitted she cant be for sure that we will see the right neurosurgeon. Please continue to pray for us as this is very difficult. If the surgeon cannot do surgery on any of the tumors then we will only have the option of a trial based medication that may or may not work for Shannon. We pray that she is able to have the surgery to give her relief from the symptoms and that the surgery is very successful for her. If they determine that Shannon is having any severe neurological changes then she may be admitted tomorrow after meeting with the neurologist in her office.

UPDATE FROM THE WACHAL FAMILY: Please like and share this post so that all of our friends that are following my wife's situation can be brought up to date on the recent updates. We met with a NF specialist yesterday to go over different options that we have available. All together we discussed all of my wifes symptoms and all of her tumors. The most significant symptoms can all be related to the compression of her brain due to the tumors there. She has a total of 4 tumors in her brain that are of concern. The 2 we knew about and 2 others that I didnt realize were actually tumors (they look like part of the brain). The 2 that we knew about we will be meeting with the neurosurgeon to determine how much of them can be removed and how much we are going to be left with. They will probably only be able to get out about 1/2 of the big one and probably closer to 90% of the smaller one according to the specialist that we saw yesterday. In terms of the other 2 they are inoperable and will only be able to be treated by some of the trial medications that are out there for NF2. One of such medications is Avastin. This medication is currently very difficult to gain insurance approval for and it may take some time to get her on the medication. This medication has only just in the last few years began to be used to treat NF2 patients and can only be given to patients that have aggressive tumors in the brain. This medication is only 54% effective (as of the last time I looked at the clinical trial) at shrinking or stopping the growth of tumors. There are other medications out there but they do not have anywhere near as much support as Avastin. Right now the plan is to look into surgery and likely remove as much as we possibly can from the brain and then begin Avastin around 2 months later. As for an update on how Shannon is doing: Shannon has been very sick the last week. She has slept most of the day and then all night. She has been nauseous and having headaches quite often as well. Emotionally this has been very difficult right now as we dont really know what will be happening and if any of the treatments will work or not. Please continue to pray for us through this difficult time. Also if you can support us we would greatly appreciate it as I am not getting a lot of hours at work with my wife being sick right now.

UPDATE FROM SHANNON:My life may seem sad but its not...its just different...I find joy and laughter in small moments. I must be honest, I have a life threatening genetic disease that can't be cured but it can be managed. With NF2 (Neurofibromatosis Type 2) when your health starts declining rapidly the chances of survival for a couple years is very slim. So I'm going to spend as much time as possible with my husband and daughter. I will still battle the evils of Nf while at home with my loved ones instead of a hospital bed and unfamiliar surroundings. Prayers Greatly Appreciated. Remember to share your Joys and holy laughter everyday. So there is no missunderstanding let me clearly state I'm still working with doctors just from home

STATUS FROM SHANNON:

Yes NF is basically a slow gentic mutation of cancer...learned that through reading some scholarly articles. ...doctors also just diagnosed me with arthritis and osteoporosis...though I try to hide it I have been in a lot of pain and anger bubbles up sometimes from somewhere deep inside . But I still have hope. I would appreciate prayers and if anyone has any tips to battle the pains of NF2, arthritis and osteoporosis. .

UPDATE: DISCHARGED... MOVING BACK TO NY... STILL NEED $$$...

Shannon was discharged from the hospital on December 13th after doctors determined that although surgery needed to be done they didn't want to do it yet because the surgeries are going to be large surgeries. The doctors have mentioned multiple times that it may be good for us to go home and spend time with family during this time. Shannon's health has declined very rapidly over the last couple of months. She now experiences daily panic attacks, the tumors in her body continue to grow very quickly (we now have one of them that has grown 1 cm in the last 2 months), Her body continues to weaken and she sleeps most of the day. Currently Shannon has 8 tumors on the serious list with another 10+ tumors on the list of tumors that could become serious if they continue to grow. At this time my wife and I have decided that although we will continue to focus on my wife's health to hopefully improve the prognosis we first and foremost want to focus on our family. We have decided that although it will be difficult we will be moving back to NY to live with my parents. They will be able to help us out with taking care of Abigail along with helping me care for my wife. We will be having our care at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY. We want the time that we have with each other to be surrounded by family and friends. NF is a horrible sickness and one that I hope one day will have a cure for it to help the next Shannon out. Shannon will still be undergoing these major surgeries so we continue to ask for help financially to be able to allow me to spend the time with my wife when she is undergoing these surgeries. Shannon has high spirits and we continue to pray for each and every one of you. Thank you again, Charles

OUT OF HOSPITAL (FOR NOW) BUT STILL FEELING ROTTEN:

Okay, so Shannon went home from the hospital 2 days ago, but is still feeling really really badly. She is now able to consume some soft food- like apple sauce, pudding, etc. She is mostly sleeping, is very weak, and has lost a great deal of weight- very quickly. Charles and Shannon are waiting for results from tests and biopsy performed last week.

WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO?

A friend on Facebook asked me what the funds were for and I told Charles that I'd been asked this, so they wrote a detailed description, which I will post below:
____________________________________________________________

We were asked to kinda give you a look at the financial aspect of what the funds that we receive will be used for. First and foremost my wife and I want to say thank you to everyone who donates to the fundraiser and who donated to any fundraiser in the past.

The biggest reason and need for the money is the actual medical expenses and related expenses. Each time Shannon is in the hospital for a very long time (more then a week) it costs us around $500 for gas to get back and forth, food for Charles at the hospital, and any potential hotel costs associated when Shannon is in the ICU for Charles to get some sleep. This increases by around $150 for each week that Shannon is in the hospital past 2 weeks

With the stay at the hospital there is also the loss of income for Charles which is around $300 a week. I however am not really asking you to give for this reason because I could go back to work and leave my wife in the hospital but I feel that I should be there for her.

The other costs associated with Shannon being in the hospital come when she has to have surgery which can be anywhere from $1,000 to $5,000 per surgery that needs to happen.

Medications after she goes home can also be expensive with some of them being $50 or more even after insurance covers the medication.

The money that we receive will be used to cover the expenses above along with the expenses of living when Shannon is in the hospital.

My wife and I also would like to be able to visit my daughter in Rochester, NY while she stays with my parents for Christmas or New Year's and if we can have enough to cover the trip along with all of the expenses of this hospital visit ect then we may be able to go up and visit them.

With great thanks,

Charles and Shannon Wachal

Okay, here is the first update and some details that I didn’t say earlier. In the past couple of months, we have found out that Shannon has a tennis-ball sized tumor in her hip along with at least 30 smaller ones, increased growth of a brain tumor, surgery to remove one of many spinal tumors, and the most recent news is a difficulty in keeping down food, due to yet another tumor- which is golf-ball sized.

After seeing the doctors this morning, Charles and Shannon have learned that the doctors are going to use an upper GI camera test (esophagogastroduodenoscopy) where they put a camera down her throat to see what is going on down there. They believe that the tumor is inside the walls of the esophagus.  They may also be able to do a biopsy on the tumor to make sure no cancer is there. Shannon will be under general anesthesia for the entire time.

Shannon is trying her best to stay positive through it all and to not be scared. She always has a smile on her face!

I started this fundraiser on Sunday night, and as of Tuesday afternoon the video on the front page has gotten 88 views, I’ve raised $696 and this is just the beginning on my goal to raise $25,000 for this amazing friend of mine and her beautiful little family.  For everyone who has donated so far, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I realize that the donations are not tax-deductible at this time but I am working on finding ways to improve this.

I would greatly appreciate it if you go to the page and SHARE it with your friends, family and co-workers… and strangers too, if you are feeling really ambitious!
