The Story

Zim Code is a registered Zimbabwean nonprofit coding school (#MA0000329/2016) whose mission is to bring coding to the forefront of youth education and socio-economic empowerment in Zimbabwe.

Zim Code began as a 12-week Introduction to Programming summer project led by Zimbabwean college students. It then grew into a nonprofit following its initial success. Zim Code is currently based in Bulawayo and has spread to over 8 high schools. We provide coding courses to high school students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds who face significant barriers of access to skills like coding. We also offer basic computing courses to the general public.

Zim Code was founded in January, 2016 by Alvin Chitena, then a freshman at Wesleyan University. Alvin learnt how to code at Wesleyan and immediately developed a passion for it. He realized that he shouldn't have had to wait for 19 years to learn how to do something he is so passionate about. He decided to start a coding school to bring the amazing opportunity he had at Wesleyan back home to Zimbabwe.

The majority of the schools we work with have inadequate resources and equipment to support our coding courses. We solve this by using our mobile coding lab (laptops, projectors and internet) to deliver coding lessons on the go to high schools. Every student gets to use their own computer and code at their own pace. Our tutors mostly consists of young college students below the age of 25, so our lessons have a peer-to-peer structure. Most of our students have remarked that Zim Code tutors are more relatable and for that reason, they learn more comfortably. Our nonprofit model allows us to bring our product to those who need it the most socio-economically disadvantaged youths. There exists other traditional computer colleges and night schools for coding, but they are beyond the reach of the greater majority of Zimbabweans. Ours coding school model is the first of its kind in Zimbabwe.
