The Story

In February of 2016 Alan and Laura Honda traveled to Tanzania on a once in a lifetime trip.  While there, they visited a remote school in the small lake-front village of Magu-Mwanza near the Serengeti National Park called Zariki Nursery and Primary School, which has 280 students enrolled this year.  They saw the children had no books, supplies or shoes.  Upon learning that the cost of building a classroom at the Zariki School was $13,000, Alan knew he wanted to help.  Alan and Laura watched as the children sang and talked to them about their favorite animals. Alan was so inspired by the students and teachers there that he made a pact with himself that he would be a part of building a classroom.   He strongly believed that these kids deserve an education and an opportunity to take care of their wildlife, themselves, and their community.  Unfortunately Alan was not able to fulfill this when his life was suddenly cut short.  With help from friends and family, Alan’s legacy can live on by building a classroom in his name.

On this trip Alan also met Mr. Patel, who founded African Wildlife Trust.  This organization helps protect elephants and works to put an end to illegal poaching.  This organization started Ivory Orphans, a place where they foster animal orphans until they can be released.  Alan and Laura were able to tour the Ivory Orphan facility and saw two beautiful lion cubs whose mother was killed by humans.  Alan was in awe of Mr. Patel and his son and was inspired to help support the work of the African Wildlife Trust.  If we surpass our goal, the extra funds will be donated to the African Wildlife Trust.

To our dear friends and family,
Thank you again for donating to our YouCaring.com fundraiser in memory of Alan.  Thanks to your generosity we beyond exceeded our goal of $15,000 and have raised a whopping total of $28,131.  We sent $13,000 to the Zariki School at the end of November, and construction of Alan's classroom is underway!  We added some pictures to the gallery on this page of the "foundation stage" which was just built.
The donation to the African Wildlife Trust is going to be placed this month!
Best,
Laura, Harlan, Melanie, and Danielle

Thank you to all who have shared and donated to this fundraiser in honor of Alan.  A $13,000 check for the Zariki School was mailed out two weeks ago to the foundation that supports the school.  The School founders and the Honda family have been discussing ideas for the purpose of the room.  One idea is that it could be a technical skills or vocational learning center, such as a place where students would learn how to use woodworking tools and how to sew.  Another idea is for it to be a place where students can study science.  Zariki School has suggested putting up a plaque or painting a mural in the classroom in Alan’s honor.  We will post more updates as the classroom is built.

If you donated and would like to make your donation tax deductible, please send your name and mailing address to Danielle Hiser at [email protected].  Your information will be forwarded to the Zariki School foundation and African Wildlife Trust so that they can issue you a donation receipt for your tax records.
