The Story

5 countries. 25 dancers.

Dancers from all over Europe have gathered to form history’s first pan-European Yosakoi dance team, with the once-in-a-lifetime dream of participating in the 64th Yosakoi Festival in the birthplace of Yosakoi, Kōchi, Japan.

We are the Yosakoi Europe United Team Rikuryoku Kyoushin!

And we need YOUR help!

This project is currently funded by the participating members themselves, which is a huge financial burden that not all of us can afford. This project is not only ours; we want to engage as many people as possible to spread our love for yosakoi to the world. We invite you to join us on our journey.

Please help us fulfill our dream of being the first pan-European team to dance in Kōchi!

Who are Rikuryoku Kyoushin?

Yosakoi Europe United Team Rikuryoku Kyōshin is the first-ever pan-European Yosakoi dance team with members from Finland, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, and Sweden.

This project began in March 2016 and is a huge step for the European yosakoi community. Our dance is an original collaboration of artists from five different European countries, embracing the theme “United in Diversity”.

With our music, costume, and choreography, we wish to show that unity is possible even when the elements are very diverse. With your help, “United in Diversity” will premier on the August 10th in Kōchi, Japan, bringing our energy to the Japanese audience.

Joining the festival is huge and expensive undertaking that would not have been possible by a single European team, but made possible by working together. Our love for Yosakoi brought this project to daylight and is what drives this project further. Through the creation process, we have learned to throw away our cultural differences as we struggle together towards our final goal. Even though our words are different, our voices will be heard through our dance.

What is Yosakoi?

Yosakoi is a Japanese festival dance style born after World War II to bring people together in joy and energy. Yosakoi blends traditional and contemporary music and choreography, ranging from elegant gentle motions to energetic and powerful moves, giving teams the freedom to create a performance to fit their own style, taste, and theme.

All yosakoi dances are brought into harmony by incorporating a local folk song in the music and the use of a clapper-like instrument called naruko in order to add an extra dimension to the dance. During parades, each team is accompanied by a lavishly decorated truck, used to carry the speakers and lead the team forward.

Yosakoi is danced in festivals all over Japan, by teams of up to 150 dancers, dressed in vibrant, unique costumes.  Every August, a festival with tens of thousands of dancers and hundreds of thousands of spectators is held in Kōchi, Japan, the birthplace of Yosakoi. Recently, yosakoi fever has spread internationally, with teams on every continent
