The Story

On June 14, the Sockeye Willow fire near Willow, AK devastated a small community. Living in this area were several dog mushers, some well known, some not, but all of them lost their homes. In these homes were not only everything they owned but countless memories of time spent on the trail with their beloved dogs. Fortunately no human lives were lost and for that we are all thankful. A few dogs perished and we share the heartbreak of their owners.

These people will need help to rebuild their homes and their lives. They have immediate needs to care for their dogs. Everything that was dear to them is gone.

Northwest Sled Dog Association and all mushers and dog lovers in the Lower 48 and beyond stand in solidarity with our friends in Willow. We will help you rebuild!

Out of the rubble, the mushers who lost everything are finding some hope. Bob Chlupach's 1977 Iditarod finishers belt buckle was found today! The people who lost their homes are already starting the long, hard task of cleaning up and their hearts will be broken over and over as the realization of all they have lost sinks in. Thank you all so much for donating. It means so much.
