Wild Buffalo Defense is a collective of indigenous and non-native organizers dedicated to seeing wild buffalo roam free on the plains and to protecting the treaty rights of native people to harvest buffalo. We use direct action physically stop Yellowstone National Park's continued slaughter of the last wild buffalo and raise awareness about the issue.
The two Yellowstone buffalo herds are the last free ranging, genetically pure, plains buffalo herd in the United States. These buffalo are decedents of the 23 buffalo that hid in Yellowstone National Park during the mass buffalo slaughter of the 1800s. The US government and expanding settler populations conducted this slaughter with the explicit purpose of driving buffalo to extinction and thus the indigenous people of the plains to starvation.
The current management of the Yellowstone buffalo continues this legacy of genocide by ensuring that wild buffalo do not return to the plains. The buffalo management program does this by following a year 2000 environmental impact statement (EIS) which prioritizes limiting the spread of brucellosis in buffalo. Under the guise of this EIS, Yellowstone maintains a multimillion-dollar capturing facility inside the park and sending up to 1000 of the 4000 buffalo to slaughter every year.
We are working on a multi-faceted campaign to stop the Yellowstone National Parks Service from continuing their yearly slaughter of the last wild buffalo herds. Our collective puts our bodies on the line to prevent the capture and killing of the buffalo by government agencies. Along with direct action we also pursue legislative change through lobbying, canvassing, and community outreach.
This is truly a grassroots campaign. Please support our campaign fund. Your money will go to the direct defense of wild buffalo. All of our flyers, banners, public information requests, gas money, food, lodging, and bail funds are being funded by the members of the collective. This requires us to constantly seek temporary work to fund our organizing. Please support our efforts and help us set up the infrastructure needed to wage a successful organizing campaign to eliminate the laws preventing wild buffalo from roaming the plains while also taking the necessary steps to ensure the survival of the surviving herds.
Please support Wild Buffalo Defense and help save the wild buffalo!
