The Story

The video of Ms. Virginia McLaurin dancing and talking with the Obamas was seen around the world. It has given us all hope.

A lot of people have written to say they would like to give back to Ms. McLaurin. Therefore, this donations page was created so that we can all help her have the resources she needs to live comfortably and to continue her active role in the community. As she has shared in her interviews with the media following the visit to the White House, she volunteers as a UPO foster grandparent, collaborates with other tenants in the fight for quality living conditions, and is active in her church.

We also encourage you to look out for the people like Ms. McLaurin in your neighborhood. There are elders everywhere who give back to the community and could use some support. They also have stories to tell. Ms. McLaurin came to the attention of the White House after she started recording short oral history interviews about her life growing up as a sharecropper and coming to D.C. during the Great Migration. She also talked about the challenges in her apartment building in the face of gentrification. Learn more from her Tumblr pageand her Facebook page.

Ms. McLaurin had a wonderful time at a professional baseball game on Thursday May 26 at the invitation of the Washington Nationals. See a video clip and read about the visit here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/nationals-journal/wp/2016/05/26/the-107-year-old-who-danced-with-the-obamas-attends-her-first-baseball-game/
She continues to enjoy her new senior-friendly apartment with natural light and a view on a school playground across the street. Our thanks to everyone for your support that made this move possible.

On Sunday the Washington Post ran a story about how Ms. McLaurin could not get her photo ID renewed due to new Homeland Security requirements for a birth certificate or a letter from the county of birth saying that a certificate was not on file. (Read here.) This was a catch-22 for Ms. McLaurin, since the county would not respond to her request for documentation without a picture I.D. The story received national attention, and within 24 hours not only did Ms. McLaurin receive an I.D. from the Mayor in person, but more importantly the requirements in D.C. were changed for all seniors over 70. We have wonderful news to share. Thanks to your generous donations, early last week Ms. McLaurin moved into a new apartment with lots of natural light, a view onto a playground across the street, senior-friendly and fully independent facilities, an elevator, and the option of joining fellow tenants for a complimentary lunch and other activities every day. New furniture donated by Bob's and WHUR was delivered yesterday. The apartment building is close to her church and the school where she volunteers -- so she is still in the same community.

Ms. McLaurin is telling everyone, "I LOVE it."

This move could not have been possible without your support.

With the help of her son, Ms. McLaurin is catching up with this week on doctor appointments and visiting a dentist who is working pro-bono to provide her a new set of teeth.

We have added a few photos and we will post a video message from her soon. In the meantime, it is safe to say she is overjoyed and very comfortable. When she is not out and about, her favorite place is sitting by the window in her new apartment.

Thank you.
