The Story

In a tragic accident on Tuesday May 30, 2017, the Summit Police Department and the entire city of Summit lost a valued officer, community member and friend. This loss has greatly affected not only our law enforcement community and the citizens of Summit, but countless people far and wide. Matthew Tarentino epitomized what a law enforcement officer should be: a respected, trusted colleague with unwavering dedication and enthusiasm for his calling.

"My entire family on my mothers side is somehow involved in law enforcement," Officer Tarentino told a recent interviewer. "From a young age, I thought 'ah' that's an honorable job. A job that will let me go out and help other people - and not just help other people - but help build a strong community bond with the people who live in the town."

Officer Tarentino was the face of the department’s community policing unit and understood the importance of building relationships within Summit, most recently serving as Summit's DARE officer. During his time with the Summit Police Department, Matt created a lasting imprint on the department and the city as well as the children of Summit. While Officer Matthew Tarentino may be gone, he will never be forgotten.

The coming days, weeks and months will undoubtedly be difficult for all of us. We ask for support from the community for his wife Victoria, their two sons, Robert (3) and Raymond (2) and a third child due in August.

On behalf of the Summit P.A.L., the Summit Police Department, the City of Summit and the entire Summit community, we are asking for donations to help support the family in this time of need and ensure that Officer Tarentino's legacy is never diminished.

A Message of Thanks

"We, the siblings of Detective Matthew and Vickie Tarentino, can never thank the Summit PAL enough for the tremendous gesture of starting this fund in Matt's memory for our sweet sister and their young children. During these most devastating days, the kind words, memories, prayers, and most certainly the generous donations are humbling and comforting, and will make their navigating the road ahead just a little easier. We are so deeply appreciative. On behalf of our sister, we extend her most sincere awe and gratitude for everything that has been done to honor Matt and comfort her family during this time. "

From a member of the Tarentino Family -

Thank you for your consideration and support during this deeply difficult time. Our family has been shaken to its core with the loss of the most tremendous man, our brother, Matt. His character was unparalleled in today's age. Matt held himself to the highest standard and would not waver in times of adversity. He will always be remembered as a man of incredible strength and honor. For his family, we will remember his gentleness and devotion. The man doing puzzles on the floor or playing hide and seek with his children. The man who just always seemed to have the right answers. The bounce in his step; the flutter of his laugh; his jokes, both attempted and successful; his smile will never be forgotten. Above all, his devotion to God is what guided his path. It made him, yes, an amazing brother and son, but it made him the BEST husband and father. There was more love and more life lived in Vickie and Matt's marriage than many will ever feel. The life they created together is and forever will be beautiful and awe-inspiring. Some life events just bring you to your knees- and there, it is time to pray. Pray for the soul of our dear brother, Matthew. That he finds peace and eternal joy in the Kingdom of God. Pray for my beautiful sister, whose strength and grace in this time is unparalleled. That God wraps her up in His arms and helps heal her pain. Pray for their incredible boys and precious baby in the womb, whose innocence and purest love and admiration for their father gives you hope for brighter days. That they know and feel the love of their Dad everyday and one day be a shining example for all- just the way Matt has been. For his family, give comfort and strength. For his friends, coworkers, and every community whose lives he touched, may they remember and honor him always. Thank you all for your outpouring of love and prayers. We appreciate it more than you know. In lieu of flowers or food, please consider giving to this tremendous fund to support and honor Matt's legacy, his precious wife and children.
