The Story

It was noticed that Velvet was limping and believed to have ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).
Upon following up for his leg, it was discovered he had a large tumor behind his knee, as well as tumor in the lymph nodes of his neck and also a large tumor in his chest.
After recently losing their dog of just two years, wonderful family had noticed 18-month old Velvet (who was rescued from a very high-kill shelter), and fell in love with him.  They wanted to foster Velvet while he was being treated for what we initially thought was a torn ligament injury. They hoped to adopt him as soon as he was well.
To everyone's dismay, it was soon discovered that Velvet has cancer.

Velvet's form of cancer is aggressive and painful ~
Please help us provide the best cancer care while his foster family gives Velvet the quality of life he so deserves.
Thank You!

Rest in Peace
May 2014 ~ December 12, 2015

Beautiful Smash (Velvet)
Brave, strong, happy and loving
Lost his life to an aggressive form of cancer. In just a matter of weeks, this most wonderful dog was overcome and could no longer go on.

Rescued from Brooklyn CACC in April of this year, it's been a difficult and too short of a journey for our young pup. Velvet. His big head tilted, tail always wagging, while he grunted with excitement, happy to see you.

Our hearts are filled with sadness for this loss.
He brought much joy to all around him. Friendly and playful, this young dog showed nothing but love despite intense and debilitating pain he was feeling.
Always wanted to please, right to the end.

Our love and gratitude to
Liz and Matt; both very special people. They knew they would face sorrow but gave Smash a home, They loved him...and cared for him - he was family. With them he had a chance, albeit brief, to know what a loving home feels like.
Our thoughts and prayers are with them as this was hard for all. May they be blessed to find their next dog, who'll bring them as much joy as Bridger and Smash. May you grow older, together.

Tonight; there is another star shining brightly
Smash will always be in our hearts

Velvet was seen on 12/9 by his oncologist, and received an IV of Zometa and additional medication.
There is truly nothing further we can do for Velvet other than keep him comfortable until it is time for him to leave us.
Our hearts are breaking for our Velvet and his family.  Please sending loving thoughts for them.

As of 12/5/15, Velvet seems to be wracked by tumors appearing all over his body. When simply petting Velvet, your hand will pass over tumors both large and small. His hind leg has the largest tumor and has atrophied and wasted, however, he seems to be able to amble along on three legs just fine.  He has also lost a little weight.  His pain medication was changed and he appears to be doing a little better since he wanted to play with his ball and toys.  Velvet is also taking turmeric paste with his food 3x daily and we are hoping the properties of the paste will inhibit the rapid spreading of his cancer.

Velvet will next see a canine oncologist at a specialty practice.  Thank you to all who have been supportive and praying for 18 month old Velvet, whose young life has been quite a journey from stray on the street, to shelter, to rescue, to home, to fighting cancer.
