The Story

In mid-February 2016, after almost two months of testing to alleviate severe headaches and physical discomfort, Vegen was diagnosed with a rare case of stage 4 colon cancer with CSF (cerebral spinal fluid) neoplastic meningitis. There are very few cases known today. His treatment started late February, he is undergoing chemotherapy through a line surgically to his brain to address the cancer in his spinal fluid. He is also enduring another systemic treatment to contain the cancer in his colon. The cancer combined with neoplastic meningitis poses extremely difficult hurdles for the doctors.

Vegen is only 38 years old. He’s a loving son, father, husband, brother, friend, DJ, Blazer fan, and car buff. His wife Traci is an incredibly caring mother, Women’s Resource Center Coordinator and true friend with the kindest of hearts.  Their daughters, Amira and Alina are 6 and 3 years old. Their family bond is especially strong and this diagnosis has been devastating and could not have happened to finer people. This is an exceptionally trying time for their family and the upcoming months and years will be equally challenging. This is where we come in…

Vegen and Traci are the type of people that don’t ask for help, so we are asking for them. The road ahead will be full of obstacles for the Boyle-Galestiantz family and during this time we will be sending our love and support. I think most of us feel helpless, but would like to show support in any way we can…here is what you can do. We are asking for positive energy, prayers, thoughts, and any donations you can make. If we can help financially, their focus and energy can stay on Vegen, family, and healing. Vegen, Traci, Amira, and Alina are our family and some of the most incredible people we know. They have touched so many of our lives and hearts. Please help in any way you can. Thank you.

Journal entry by Traci Boyle-Galestiantz

Vegen passed away this morning at 2:12AM comfortably in his own bed.  After 14 months of pure agony, his mind, body and spirit are now at peace.  I imagine him playing basketball with his music cranked up as high as it can go.  His limits in his mobility and then hearing were so hard on him and gives me great relief and comfort to think he has them back now- hopefully with some additional super powers.
We would like to invite everyone to attend a Memorial Service for Vegen on Saturday, Dec 31st from 1-3PM at the PCC SE Community Hall.  We will end this stupid year and look forward with hope and energy into 2017- as V would have wanted.

Our local news station KGW put together a very heartfelt segment on their live broadcast last week. They did a wonderful job of highlighting what Vegen and his family are going through and the importance of family and friends. It all came about when a friend of Vegen's reached out to the Blazers organization and Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum responded with a surprise visit to his home,
the rest is history.
Here's a link below to the segment for everyone that is keeping Vegen and his family in their thoughts and prayers.

Now more than ever...

There is no easy way to post this update. Vegen was released from the ICU into hospice care this week. Over the last year he's faced countless obstacles and has fought relentlessly for himself and his family. New complications always seem to introduce and compound an already critical situation. After numerous treatment attempts, Vegen has opted for no more medical interventions and will focus on spending time with his family and friends. The goal now is to keep him as comfortable as possible and show him all the love we can!

I cannot imagine, therefore I will not try to word what Vegen and his family are going through. I admire his strength, positivity, patience, courage, and endurance. I think his strength comes from Traci who has been rock-solid and both families and friends have been amazing. I also believe most of his strength is derived and motivated by his two girls, Amira and Alina.

If you’ve spent any time with V, you'll soon realize just how awesome he is. We meet people in life and tend to lose touch over time and relationships fade, but Vegen is an exception. It’s times like these when the world stops and you realize what's important.

Now what? I think Traci said it best, we shower Vegen with love. Send a video, email, text, card, letter, or schedule a time, maybe tell him how he's impacted your life and made it richer. Return the same love that he’s shown all these years. Personally, I would not be the same without his influence in my life, I can truly say that he’s made me a better person and is like a brother to me. Now is the time, everyday he is with us is an opportunity for him to feel loved, let’s take advantage.

Thank you all for everything, much love!!!
