And so the journey continues. Two years ago, I was living at the Urban Light (UL) headquarters in Chiang Mai, Thailand, helping to fulfill the organization’s mission to end the sexual and systemic exploitation of young males in Thailand. It is a privilege to be back working with this organization after two years stateside. The growth UL has seen over the past two years has blown me away. There is a tireless Thai staff, including a social worker, case manager, outreach specialist, and an amazing new Thailand Director. With this incredible growth, fundraising capacity needs to be increased, something I have tasked myself with over the next several months.
As I did in 2013, I will be fundraising and raising awareness at the Colour Bar in the Anusarn Market (a local tourist hot spot). During my fundraising efforts at Colour Bar, I would like to sell Urban Light merchandise at the regularly scheduled shows---- t-shirts, stickers, and copies of the research I completed while in Thailand in 2013. In 2013, I raised over 100,000 Baht (~$3,000 USD) at the Colour Bar, and this year, I would like to DOUBLE that fundraising goal.
This is where I need YOUR help! The budget at Urban Light is currently very tight with all of the growth that has happened in the past few months. Our programmatic costs including outreach, rehabilitation and housing has been prioritized along with medical supply and other essential needs purchases. In order to revamp the Urban Light merchandise supply (and increase our capacity to raise money), I am sponsoring this YouCaring page.
Funds from this collection will go towards purchasing T-Shirts and stickers to sell in Chiang Mai, along with a mobile Credit Card POS system (Thailand’s economy is largely cash based, but with the ability to accept international credit cards, our fundraising efforts will undoubtedly grow exponentially with the large amounts of tourists regularly visiting Chiang Mai).
All donations will be directly deposited into Urban Light’s account and is 100% tax deductible (Urban Light is a registered 501(c)(3) organization).
Having quality merchandise is a big step to spreading awareness across the world, and all of your help is greatly appreciated! Let’s get this ball rolling and music flowing! Can’t wait to keep everyone updated on the fundraising goal over the next few months!
