Upstate New York Collegiate Rugby Conference named 14 women to its side for the NSCRO Women’s 7s All-Star Championships, to be played January 20-21 at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, FL.
The team will face seven other small college conference all-star teams; Upstate is joined in Pool A by LoneStar, Mid-Atlantic and New England; Pool B features Allegheny, Ohio Valley, Prairie States and South. Pool play will take place Saturday, with knock-out rounds set for Sunday.
Hailing from seven colleges across Upstate New York, 12 players will travel to Florida in January to compete for the all-star title. Maggie Nelsen from Colgate and Caroline Martin from Oneonta were selected but unable to travel.
State champions University of Rochester provide four of their veterans to the team; seniors Bella Drago, Emily Grey and Becca Silver, and junior Tor Breza. Conversely, runner-up St. Bonaventure adds two young backs; sophomore Emily Sion and freshman Kelly DeGrood.
Juniors Megan Hess and Kayla O’Brien led Niagara to a playoff trip. Sophomore Niamh Fitzpatrick helped Hamilton earn a playoff berth as well.
Senior Codi Fletcher from Plattsburgh has sevens experience with the college and Long Island RFC.
Longtime NSCRO power Colgate provided two more young players; Ann Hart was a part of the team’s sevens national championship last spring, while freshman Grace Schreiber is showing promise in her first sevens season.
The team is coached by David Chapman (Colgate University), Clarence Picard (St. Bonaventure University), and Meredith Pyke (University of Rochester).
