My name is Yerkebulan Alpysbay, my friends and family fondly call me Yerko. I am 17 years old. I moved to Ithaca 2 years ago with my mother, not knowing a word of English. Now I am a student at Ithaca High School.
I live with my mother – Gulzhan. My elder brother, Madihan, lives back in Kazakhstan. He has been handicapped since birth. My mother works very hard to support both of us by doing multiple jobs on campus while trying to fulfill her requirements as a student at Cornell Institute for Public Affairs.
Recently I was accepted into the Cornell University’s Summer College Program for 2013, to study Hotel Management. I am extremely honored and excited to be accepted by this program. Opportunities like these are very rare for young Kazakhs. One of my long-term goals is to open a small organization that teaches young Kazakhs about hospitality and hotel management, in Astana, Kazakhstan. I am writing to ask for you support in realizing my dream. The tuition of the summer school is $3815. Cornell has been very supportive by giving me $1,000 financial aid, however, I am still short of $2,815. In order for me to attend this summer school, I have to make the tuition payment by May 17th, 2013. This will only happen if I can raise the tuition on time.
Why This Cause is Important?
For me hospitality and business are values that we encounter in many moments and events in our daily life in Kazakhstan. Hospitality is the secret of entertaining. In my Kazakh culture, it is important that we make our guests feel welcome, pleased, and enjoyable at home. If we do that honestly, the rest takes care of itself. I would like to work with people from different backgrounds, different needs, and hope to develop my leadership skills.
Attending Cornell Summer College Program is a great opportunity for me to introduce myself to a new educational system, and to take college courses that are related to my future dreams.
I hope you will help me realize my dream. Your contribution will make it possible for me to participate in this program. You would be able to contribute by clicking on the GIVE NOW link on this page. Share this experience with me by checking out my personal blog which I will update regularly over the next few months - http://yerkodotnet.wordpress.com/
It is both humbling and exciting to be accepted for the Cornell Summer College Program 2013. I would like to thank you for your kind support.
