My name is Alyssia Akers, I am 18 years old and I live in Detroit, Michigan. In high school I was a good student and a four-sport varsity athlete. My real passion is community activism. I have done cleanups around my community and organized events to convince city leaders to support young people by preventing violence and helping them find jobs. I have also worked on boarding up abandoned buildings around my high school, which led MTV True Life to follow my story for their TV documentary called “I’m Saving Detroit.”
Being a part of the community has made a huge impact on me and I want to further my education to do bigger and better things. To do this I need to attend college. I have been accepted to my first choice school, Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Even after getting loans and scholarships, however, I still need to raise $7000 to attend this Fall.
Overcoming barriers is a skill I had to learn early in my life. Growing up in a single parent household in Detroit, being poor was a huge part of my experience. I learned that the world was unfair, but instead of crying and being upset with life, I kept my thoughts positive and looked at the skills I was learning in these experiences. I learned how to be responsible and also I learned how to stay strong when dealing with adversities. But more than anything, I believed that I shouldn’t let these negative situations distract me from wanting more for myself. Going to Bowling Green means that I will obtain an education that will continue to develop my mind and allow me in turn to transform the lives of youth and enrich their community.
Right now I'm doing everything I can to get financial aid and loans, yet it’s very difficult because I live with a single parent (my dad) who’s unemployed, has bad credit, and he's unable to co-sign a student loan. The bill for my first semester at Bowling Green is $15,000. The financial aid package I was given is $8,000. I believe I'm going to be able to get an additional $3,000 in financial aid. This leaves me $4,000 short, which is why I started this youcaring page. I'm hoping that people will see my story, believe in my goals and character, and support my dream of being the first in my family get a college eduction.

UPDATE: Bowling Green didn't give me any more financial aid. They say I'm at my maximum amount they can give. My bill for the first semester after financial aid is currently at $7,800. I've raised almost $2000 on youcaring (THANK YOU EVERYBODY!) and I've raised another $1500 in tax deductible donations. Also, I received a scholarship from the Ford Foundation for $1000 for the upcoming school year. this leaves me with $3,300 that I need to raise in the next 10 days to make it to Bowling Green this Fall. I'm very thankful for all of your support and money givin to me. I'm so close to my goal, I can feel it! With all of your help I can get to Bowling Green, and make you all proud!
