The Story

Tuckerman is a sweet 12 yo Golden retriever that looks and acted like a much younger pup before his health took a sudden downturn. As recently as mid-May he was skiing with me and acting playfully as he always has.

Recently we noticed that it seemed like someone pulled the plug on Tuckerman. Instead of jumping up and grabbing a ball to greet us when we came home, he just laid there and looked at us and we were lucky to get a wag or two of his tail.

The initial vet check up showed that something was up with his blood work and an X-Ray showed that his heart is slightly enlarged. Next we took him for an Ultrasound and that showed a tumor on one of his Adrenal Glands possibly causing Cushings Disease.

Further, an Echocardiogram was done to find that he had a clot in his Pulmonary Artery which we are treating with Plavix and Heparin injections which is helping to reduce the size of the clot and providing relief with his shortness of breath.

Update: Tests show that it is Cushing's Disease and we have started treatment with Vetoryl which is also expensive and requires regular testing to ensure the correct dosage.

This is the best four legged companion I've ever had and it seems everyone loves Tucker! I'm sure he has more quality years in him if we can get the help we need to provide the proper treatment.

Any help that you could provide would be greatly appreciated because Tucker wants to get back out there again!

Thank you very much,
George & Bonnie

I am happy to report that at 6 months into his treatment with Vetroyl for Cushing's Disease Tuckerman is doing wonderfully well. His coat has come back nice and thick and soft, his skin is almost all better and his energy level is very high and he is getting strong again. We have actually skied in our favorite place together three times this season and he is tolerating the cold and snowy conditions well.

Aside from his hearing loss, he is like his old self again; happy, playful and eager to engage and be active. I am so pleased to have my best friend back and so glad we didn't listen to the naysayers that suggested that it was time to let him go last Summer. I wasn't ready to part with this boy and I'm very grateful to everyone that helped us to pay the Vet bills and get to the answer that lead to his recovery.

I knew in my heart that Tuckerman was meant to Get Back Out There! Here's a video from early January, 2018

I am pleased to report that Tucker had a follow-up ACTH Stim test and visited wit his Internal Med Vet after 10 weeks on the medication and the results were excellent. The meds are the correct does and his Cortisol levels are right where the Dr. Fink wants them to be. She was very pleased with his physical appearance and energy levels. He is way better than he was just 2 months ago.
We are so pleased with the care that he has received and the results that we have seen. Tuck acts like he is years younger than he seemed in May and June and it is a joy to see him up and wagging his tail and running and playing with balls and Frisbees again. He is a happy boy and we are glad to have him back!
Thanks again to everyone that help us out with getting him the excellent care that he got, we are very grateful!

I am happy to report that Tuckerman continues to be doing well on the meds for his Cushing's Disease. As well, his last follow-up Echocardiogram with his Cardiologist showed that the Thrombus in his Pulmonary Artery had been resolved with the meds for that and so he has been cleared the doctor and no further follow-up is necessary with Cardiology!

He had a blood test on Monday to check to ensure the dosage of his Vetoryl which is treating his Cushing's was correct and it was, so no need to go up on the dosage which is great news. He seems much better and is engaged with us, more alert and seems to be a happier boy. It's like we are getting our buddy back!

Next check is in 6 weeks and we are looking forward to continued improvement as he continues with the medical treatment. I understand we need to be patient as it takes time for his coat and muscle strength to come back. We are exercising him gently in order to help him get back in shape as his strength permits.

We are very thankful for the help our friends have given us with his vet bill fundraiser. While I am disappointed for having missed this early on, I am just thankful that we finally put the clues together and got the help of some great Veterinary care to find the answer to his issues and that there was a medical treatment that seems to be working!
