The Story

***SEE UPDATES, TRISTYN IS SEEING INCREDIBLE RESULTS WITH HER STEM CELL TREATMENT ALREADY, THANK YOU EVERYONE!***

"March 15, 2016 marks the day that I was finally given a name to the disease that had ravaged my body for years. First it was found in my hands and then Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis would become everything but just another disease. This disease completely turned my life from an active lifestyle enjoying soccer and other sports to bedridden and barely able to move from the daily struggles. This resulted in me missing more than half of my junior year of high school. Initially the doctors had no clue what it was. I was put through multiple rounds of antibiotics and a pool of medications in hopes of knocking it out. I was also sent to nearly every specialist at the University of Michigan Children’s Hospital. Finally, as a result of the hard work and determination of my doctors, my disease was finally diagnosed.

The days and months that followed my diagnosis entailed taking up to 5-7 medications daily along with weekly injections of Methotrexate, a drug commonly used for chemotherapy at high doses, and infusions of a drug called Remicade every 8 weeks in hopes of slowing down the arthritis from destroying my body. Many days have ended in tears hoping and praying for relief that never seems possible. I now have arthritis in nearly every joint in my body including my spine, hips, knees, hands, feet, and knees. Within the last 3-month period I have significant changes and progression in the disease. Due to fusion of my spine, I am no longer able to reach past my knees which was once an easy task. My knees can no longer go back to a baseline straight and my hands have bony overgrowths. Daily tasks seem to slowly become an adventure of their own. Opening doors, loosening caps, and walking are all becoming increasingly difficult. Each time I go into the doctor they inform me of the continuing damage and continue to offer different treatments in hopes that we will be able to tame the disease. I also have a disease arising called scleroderma which can cause hardening of the connective tissues throughout my body. Without intervention, there will only be progression of the disease, which could eventually end in being confined to a wheel chair.

I have the opportunity to receive Stem Cell Treatment in La Jolla, California once I raise the money. The stem cell treatment takes my own stem cells from my body and repairs the damage caused by the rheumatoid arthritis. It has been used in other diseases such as multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and diabetes with great successes. There is a very good chance that this treatment could send me into remission and stop or slow down the progression of the disease. This could be the intervention that we have been waiting for!

My insurance does not cover the treatment and cost of travel expenses and follow up care. Any donation will be so greatly appreciated. I am hopeful that this treatment will change my life for the better and allow me to be a normal 18 year old once again."  - Tristyn Klemens

Current medications are not stopping the progression or helping Tristyn's pain even with the recent increased dosages. These may be damaging her body more than helping and we are at a point where we have to seek other options. The stem cell treatment has NOT been started yet, our goal is to raise enough for stem cell treatment to begin ASAP, we are hoping we can raise enough to do this before Tristyn's 19th birthday (June 2nd, 2017)! Please share with others and send your support and prayers! THANK YOU!!! - Aunt Kristi

5/12/17 UPDATE:
I have exciting news! After countless prayers, hard work, and generous donations I am receiving the stem cell treatment!!!
What a blessing it is to see all of this support rolling in. I can't express my thanks to everyone who not only donated but all the prayers.
I got a call from my aunt a couple weeks ago (right before finals) that a treatment date was open and we could "save" our spot. The date was May 16th!
Over the last couple weeks countless phone calls have been made, papers signed, doctors visits, and blood draws have been taken and in 2 days I will be flying out to California to receive the treatment!
I can barely contain my excitement! God is so good! He has crafted everything so carefully and beautifully and has lead me to another amazing opportunity.
After the stem cell treatment I will be receiving hyperbaric oxygen therapy for a week in California and then in Australia. Yes, I said AUSTRALIA!
On the 28th I will be flying to stay with my Aunt in Australia for the summer (their winter) to help heal my gut. Food sensitivities have been popping up left and right and could be one of the major culprits of a number of issues. I will be followed by a holistic doctor in Australia. After finding out the sensitivities we will be able to learn the ways to eat in a way of healing rather than hurting!
Before I received the call of all the opportunities God had carefully crafted I had my own idea in my head of how things were going to happen. I created my own plan for the future and how things were going to play out. And boy, this was a reality check! God has a perfect plan for it all. He took my hand and lead me the way HE planned and reminded me that he is in control. By handing it all to Him I could finally take this weight of trying to form my future off my shoulders (it shouldn't have been there anyways! 😜)

Please continue prayers of safe travels, healing, and peace throughout the next couple months! Along the way we will be posting updates. May 16th is the official day that I will have the surgery. May 17th I will have the stem cells infused into my body for them to do their work! From there we will relax, rest, and heal ☺️

Thank you thank you thank you!!!!

If their are any questions about anything I would be more than happy to answer!

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight."
Proverbs 3:5-6

***Donations are still very helpful after the procedure for hyperbaric oxygen treatments, required supplements to help my body recover and rebuild, clean eating, follow up appointments and of course stress management! THANK YOU!***

This girl is officially in REMISSION. No signs of inflammation to be found anywhere and my health is completely stable. This is the day I have been hoping for for what seems like forever.
I am so blessed to be symptom free and have the opportunities I have had this summer. I'm so thankful for everyone that has helped, contributed, and supported throughout this journey.
The amount of joy is beyond explanation. I've learned so much from this time, most importantly in my faith. God's timing is always perfect, regardless of how much it doesn't seem so at the time. He always fulfills His promises to us. Most importantly, how crucial it is to constantly keep Him first in every season. We have seen Him working every step of the way and looking back, we are able to see how carefully crafted everything has been to get to this time.
No more days filled with pain & struggle. Rather days filled with strength & growth await. I can't wait to see the continuing improvement in the future. Here's to being RA FREE 💪🏻

May 24 Update by Tristyn:
2 mile hike with beautiful blue California skies and no joint pain? I'll take that any day ☺️
Prior to treatment if you would have asked if I wanted to go on this type of hike I would've told you of course but I know I can't do it. Rarely was I able to walk even 1/2 mile without having pain and paying for it the next day. But I've taken a 1, 1.3, and now a 2 mile walk! I've never have felt any better. Even better yet there has been no need to take any pain medication of any kind aside from completely natural supplements. Not even Tylenol after surgery!
I cannot stress the importance of positivity through the struggles. I couldn't imagine going into this with a negative mindset. I've been blessed with an optimistic perspective and to be showered with complete peace and understanding that there is purpose behind the pain.
God has a purpose for your pain, a reason for your struggle, and a reward for your faithfulness.

MAY 17 2017 UPDATE:

Day 2 Post Op and I'm already seeing improvements 😳😍
For years I have been unable to walk distances without becoming completely exhausted and having to break from the stiffness or pain & pressure that accumulated in my joints. I've also been unable to bend my wrists past a certain point. During the day I would have to do different hand "stretches" to relieve the pressure in all my joints.
TODAY I walked about a mile and it felt amazing! There was slight pressure and some pain but nothing at all like what I experienced before! My energy has been so wonderful I've never felt so ready to take on a day as I have today. I rarely found myself doing any hand stretches.
This is so so so wonderful I can't even contain my excitement. Improvements already!!!
I've been blessed with a complete sense of peace in all of this. I trust that God has complete control and I've given him the reigns. He's using this for His ultimate plan and this life is so beautiful 😍 it brings me great joy to look back on the progress over this short amount of time.
These last couple days have consisted of a constant flow of worship music and praise in the car, in the clinic, and at home!
I can't wait to see where else this journey leads! How beautiful is this adventure ☺️
