For many trans people, the cost, administrative burden, complex standards and difficulty obtaining the requisite medical care/approval, can cause them to avoid updating their legal name and gender on government issued identification even where such updates are possible. In light of a looming Trump presidency that will continue to threaten trans peoples' lives, the pressure is on for many people to change their federal identification documents in case the existing standards for updating those are changed and to obtain state and local identification that matches who they are for safety, security and other reasons.
Currently, people can update their Social Security Administration records for free and without proof of surgery. An updated passport similarly does not require surgery but it is costly.
Assuming a trans person already obtained a legal name change in court (which can cost anywhere from $18 to hundreds of dollars):
Passport photos: $15
Passport book application: $110
Processing fee: $25
We're asking community members, allies and anyone concerned about the future of this country to donate anything you can. Please note that there is a credit card processing fee on your donation so please keep that in mind as you give. All funds go directly to trans people in need of financial support to execute this process.
If you are able to give in the amount of $150-200 outright, there is a group led by Kendra Serra who is matching individual donors with trans people in need. This fund complements Kendra's work and also provides trans people who prefer to remain anonymous the ability to receive the support they need. If you are interested in being directly matched with a trans person looking to afford passport update fees, please email Kendra at email@example.com
Thank you to anyone who can give, and please share this fund with your networks; time is of the essence!
If you are in need of funding:
Please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org
with the following information (deadnames/legal names are not shared or used):
-Current legal name
-Current city and state
-Total amount of money needed and what specific passport related fee it will cover
-A verifiable and working email address
-Your paypal or venmo account information
If you have especially extenuating circumstances that prevent your access to paypal or venmo please explain and we can discuss transferring the funds to a local LGBT organization that can then transfer them to you.
