Transilient is a traveling photo and interview project. It challenges the narrative written for trans people by the media while uplifting and empowering community members. It does this by allowing trans folks to humanize themselves. By highlighting other facets of their personalities outside of the physical transition and oppression connected to it trans people are exposed to a positive version of themselves and become relatable to cisgender people. In 2016 and 2017, Transilient traveled about 15,500 miles, interviewed 120 people in 12 weeks, and did it all on a collective budget of $9, 500.00
We have received the necessary funding to travel again in the Fall of 2018. To uphold our values surrounding equity, the Transilient directors each want to take an assistant on tour with them and skill share. The assistant will be a trans or non binary person who is young, hasn't had an opportunity to grow in their work, and most likely hasn't received a traditional education.
Homelessness and unemployment plague the trans and non binary community. In order to skill share and help trans individuals to build up a resume we need help paying them while on tour with us.
Transilient's long term goals are BIG but so is the project. We want to publish a book of the interviews and travels. Some of the proceeds from the book will support LGBT (trans centered) non profits we met on tour. Lastly, we want to buy a house in the southeast and run a Summer artist residency out of it for low income trans and non binary people of all ages.
Please donate and help trans people gain the skills required to succeed financially in the U.S. By donating you are also helping trans people feel a little safer as well.
