Since Hurricane Maria touched land on the coast of Puerto Rico on September 20th, millions of lives have drastically changed. More than 4 months after the worst natural disaster in Puerto Rico's recorded history, many remote areas of the island are still without power. Puerto Ricans are just now able to start to face the tragedy they have endured and doctors on the island are warning of an immediate mental health crisis. (If you would like to read more about Puerto Rico's mental health crisis click .)
Gretchen and Shanell, acu-punks at The Boise Acupuncture Co-op, will be traveling with Acupuncturists Without Borders from February 26th- March 4th, bringing the power of acupuncture to remote communities on the west side of the island.
Acupuncture is an incredible tool to use during natural disaster recovery because it gives it's patients the chance to experience relaxation, peace and balance. Acupuncture is clinically proven to help regulate the fight-or-flight nervous system, improve sleep, reduce anxiety and alleviate pain. We will be using tiny needles to interrupt the devastating effects of trauma, reduce suffering and help communities find resiliency!
We will be sharing every minute of the journey with you with pictures on our page and in a special newsletter when we return. Gretchen and Shanell will be traveling on their own dime and could still use a little help to fund this incredible service trip. All funds raised will go directly to helping pay for the travel cost of this trip. Any extra funds will be donated to Acupuncturists Without Borders. For those of you who have already donated, THANK YOU!
