What an amazing investment three years’ of CHABA "OBIE" Awards have been, with savvy Bridgeton HS students capturing nearly $3000 and still honoring the legacy of Oberlin Smith in distinguished college careers!
Wow. But if there was ever a "STEM" kinda guy before his time it was our own "Wonderful Wizard": designer, futurist, tech genius, Hall of Fame inventor of magnetic recording ahead of the digital revolution, workplace philanthropist and community leader. And visionary who helped save our City Park.
We STEAMed things up last year when we extended our Smith-recognition challenge to Art/Design students and got back a fantastic little graphic novel that’s on our website now. But before you check it out: check THIS out, because this success has emboldened us to create a NEW deal for a new year: Everybody in.
Yes, this means EVERYBODY. STEM. History. Art. English. Heck, you’re not even graduating? No worries. Bank your award now and every year and build your college fund till you do. Let your teachers know, then do whatever you do best.
A well-researched little essay about what makes Smith important? Sure. Your personal version of the Smith-Einstein story? Way to go! A prototype of his amazing patent for a soft-boiled egg-cooker? Awesome. Or catch the essence of his many-sided genius in a comic strip or VIDEO. We’d LOVE to put it up on our CHABA YouTube channel.
Here’s a GREAT idea: Organize. Get a group together and brainstorm a new use for the City-owned Ferracute site. Launch an appeal to the City Council. Say YOU care what happens here and want to find a way to save it.
Don’t know enough yet? Thanks to the scholars who've protected his legacy in print and online, you can Google him (there's only one) and discover what a cool dude he really was. Tell your teachers. Tell the world! Think Future just the way Smith did a century ago--in Science, Tech, Engineering, Math. AND (yes, for the A in there) Art/Design. (Check it out: He was a pretty darn good writer too!)
And tell your family and friends to come to this crowdfunding website and GIVE whatever they can to grow this legacy scholarship fund for you!
And whenever you’re inclined to think you don't have advantages, remember, your hometown is actually one of ‘em. And the people of this same hometown--and even some outside it--want to support your talent and vision and help you share it with the world.
To our generous CHABA support community: please: Give.
Give now, a little or a lot. Ask others to give. Help our kids build a future Oberlin Smith would’ve loved to see: green--thriving--beautiful--equal--tech-savvy--adaptable to change.
Want to give by mail? Send a check to CHABA 31 West Commerce Street Bridgeton 08302, “OBIE” in the memo line. Thanks!
