The Story

When Hurricane Harvey finally made landfall on August 25th, 2017, he chose Rockport, TX as his first victim.  Mark and I live nearly 100 miles from this coastal town, and the eye passed just 15 miles to the east of our home, meaning we received the dry side and winds, instead of the rain that deluged east Texas. Because we were blessed with no damage, we worked with our Yorktown friends to gather relief supplies to take to our coastal neighbors.
What we saw was heart-breaking! Rockport is a unique location in Texas ... it has become a popular destination for those with second homes here, but in many ways it is still the sleepy fishing village of Mark's youth. There are a lot of poor and elderly here and they have lost everything! The media is concentrated on Houston, but the good people of Rockport are left with devastated lives.
After spending the day handing out our truck full of supplies to grateful citizens, we were overcome with the immensity of their needs, and have vowed that we will return with more.  But we need your help! We will continue to fund this drive with our own money, but it will take much more than we can afford.  Will you help us?  (ALL MONEY RAISED WILL GO DIRECTLY TO THE HURRICANE VICTIMS IN ROCKPORT).
We have made a contact with a citizen of Rockport whose organization and distribution of relief supplies impressed us. He has told us what they need, and with your help, we can assist the good people of this small community to get back on their feet.  They have a long way to go, but with God's mercy and grace, and our compassion, they will recover.  God Bless You for helping us love our neighbor as ourselves.

A MESSAGE TO YOU FROM ROCKPORT:  I received this note from Lori of New Beginnings Ministries, our contact group in Rockport ... "I want the donors to know that most residents in Rockport have water and gas, with electric service due to be up and running by midnight. The only store open is HEB, and cleaning is on everyone's mind. There are some residents who are just returning home (having evacuated) and they are feeling devastated at seeing the destruction. We, here at New Beginnings Ministries, are happy to be the hands and feet of Jesus to so many who will be recovering from this hurricane for many months to come.  But we want to thank all the donors to this amazing Fundraiser for all you've provided us, because each of you are reaching the residents of Rockport through us. We are thankful for all of you!"

WE'RE STILL GOING! Thanks to the continued giving of so many compassionate people, we are still able to provide much-needed supplies to the residents of Rockport.  As people return, and the trees are removed, there will be an ongoing and massive clean-up of debris and dirt in homes.  So, I am now concentrating on cleaning supplies (including brooms, mops, and rakes) along with chainsaw oil/gas. We will continue to buy as long as the money holds out.  Along with Lori, I want to thank you for all you've done to make a difference in the lives of so many people.  God bless each of you!

OUT-OF-STATE DONATIONS: I want to make sure that all of Texas knows that nearly one-half of our donations collected so far have come from donors in California, Colorado, Illinois, and Idaho.  Mark and I are so grateful for the compassion shown to our fellow Texans in their time of need.  Empathy and charity towards our fellow man is not confined to a zip code.  Thank you to those from across the country who have given so much.  We Texans do not forget!

AUSTIN TO THE RESCUE:  Joe Stinus is a good friend whom we've known for years from our Church in Austin.  Joe is associated with the Austin Disaster Relief Network (ADRN) and heard about our relief project for Rockport. He arranged for us to pick up a trailer-load of Relief Tubs from ADRN, and personally bought us tarps and rope so the residents can erect some shade while they continue with clean-up.  Texans helping Texans... we're going to get through this! Thank you, Joe, for making this all happen!

ROCKPORT UPDATE: Your donations have provided us the opportunity to meet the requests of Pastor Tim and his team.  The most requested item has been box fans, so they can get some relief from the sweltering heat. We are also buying grills so the people can cook.  They were desperate for a trash dumpster, because the trash at the donation center was piling up rapidly.  We pulled a couple of strings and were able to get a trash trailer donated for 30 days, until we can find a Waste Service company that can supply them with a dumpster.

More fans and grills have been ordered, and tarps are on the way, as well.  Today we sensed a change in the atmosphere -- from panic in those first days to controlled chaos, with emphasis on the control.  There is some structure being restored as residents get down to the hard work of cleaning up.  They are receiving food and water, and the supplies you are providing are bringing order to their disrupted lives.  We are going to continue to do all we can with all you have entrusted to us.  Thank you!
