The Story

Amie and Andy Marzen have been a living example of kindness and generosity to their community for their two kids, Madeline and Benjamin. It's now time for their community to support them.

Everyone who knows Madeline knows her bright smile, inquisitive and playful 4-year-old spirit, and killer dance party moves. She is the world's best big sister and friend. On August 8th, 2017, doctors found an inoperable brain tumor, located at the top of Madeline's brain stem, along with several lesions in her spine. After spending time in both Portland and Boston for many procedures and monitoring, Madeline has been diagnosed with a very rare and aggressive form of cancer. While this is difficult news and a very serious diagnosis, we have come a long way from the terminal and un-treatable type of tumor this was initially thought to be.  The tumor is still inoperable due to its location, but it IS treatable, and it CAN be cured. The statistics are still not great, but Madeline is going to improve them. There ARE success stories, and if anyone can beat the odds, Madeline is the superhero who can do it.

Treatment will include intensive chemotherapy and radiation over the course of the next one and a half to two years, both in Portland and in Boston. This is going to be a long road. The Marzens have been told that they are likely to be spending more time IN the hospital than out over the next year or two, including a six week stay in Boston for very specific radiation treatment.  This is going to be a long road, and there are many challenges ahead. Amie and Andy will need the love, support, and generosity of their community in the coming year. Donations will be used to pay medical expenses, expenses for the Marzens to travel for treatment, and to compensate for lost wages so both Amie and Andy can support Madeline in any way needed.

If you do not feel comfortable donating online but still wish to support the Marzen family financially, Amie and Andy could also use donations in the form of gas cards or Amazon cards. If you are local to Bath, ME, and can donate the gift of time through helping Amie and Andy maintain their home when they are away, that would also be helpful. Please contact Trevor or Carrie for more information:

Most importantly, continued prayers, thoughts, and strength from their community are needed to lift this family through this journey.

As I've been saying all throughout this crazy journey, we've wanted to pay forward the kindness we've been shown.  While I don't think it's right to brag about what we've been doing to pay it forward (it seems self-bragging and congratulatory, negating the kindness) I want you to know we've been doing an average of 2-3 kindness acts minimum per week.  This ranges from buying someone behind us in line at Dunkin their breakfast (I totally sobbed doing this in her name) to donating items to the food pantry, sending gifts to good people, etc. We're making a donation to the local library today that I'm excited about, some new shakers that save Love, Madeline on them so that her love for sharing music with friends will be shared.  Even though I didn't want it to seem self-congratulatory I wanted her name on there so that her name and memory lives on.  I also have some larger plans I'm working on, but need more time.  I also started some online support groups for the hospital we were at (hotel Barbara) and am working on some special gifts for a patient there celebrating an early last Christmas. Things are happening because of your kindness, so please know we're paying it forward incrementally and it is always on our minds.

We continue to get kindness by way of meals and support from friends and I can't tell you how much that means to us.  While the paragraph above may sound like all is well, we've been struggling and the acts of kindness we've received and are giving are helping us to keep the pieces together, mostly.  It's been beyond terrible without our girl and it's hard to believe it's three weeks ago today that you left us.  My heart breaks in waves and we're trying our best for Benny.

Thank you to all who have sent cards, flowers, donations, meals, etc.  We are so blessed and grateful.  We terribly miss our girl and are heartbroken and lost but we appreciate it all.

Today our girl went to be with her grandparents in heaven.  It doesn't seem real and our hearts are beyond broken.  We'll update soon with memorial arrangements.
