The Story

My father, Paul Richard Simons passed away from presumed heart failure in Asuncion, Paraguay this past Easter weekend, on 3/30/2018. A uniquely intelligent writer, traveler, idealist, and fire-breathing anarchist, my dad will be missed by so many.

Paul was a complex person who was loved by his friends and family, and the dozens of communities he gave voice to through his writings and adventures as a journalist. Paul was a soul searcher to the end, a fearless adventurer, a rebel, a lover, a father to myself, Hannah, Max, Tristian, and Jack. He was a brother, a cousin, an uncle, a son. Paul's death was very sudden and unexpected, he left very few worldly possessions behind. Because he was far from home when he died, there will be a substantial cost to bring his remains home. It will take the effort and contribution of his community to properly lay him to rest and give his friends and family the opportunity to mourn his loss.

This fundraiser is for all who knew and loved Paul, and anyone who wants to help his community in this difficult time. Thank you for your love and support.

Sincerely, Paul's oldest daughter,

Nina Simons

Dear Friends and Family,

I do not know how to begin to thank you all for your generosity and caring. So many of you have reached out to me and my family to offer all methods of support. Because of your donations, I am happy to report that my father's body has been cremated, and his remains are on the way home. The next steps will be in bringing home his belongings, it's still a long road, but I already feel more at peace knowing that we will soon be able to celebrate his life as a family.
People who loved and cared about my dad have met in Berkeley California to celebrate his life. Friends in Athens, Greece and Rojava, Syria have expressed the desire to scatter some of his ashes there. Being a global citizen, I know my dad would have loved to be in the wind, as he always was. Others have reached out through artistic tributes, and graciously spent time collecting his works, interviews, and speeches. I truly never knew how many people appreciated my father's unique genius until these weeks. I've included some of the links to his works below, I hope you will enjoy them.

All my gratitude,
Nina

Dear Friends and Family,
I cannot begin to express my thanks and gratitude for the incredible generosity you have shown. We remarkably met the original goal of $3000 dollars raised to bring my father's remains home in less than 24 hours. Also in that short time, I have been contacted by countless people whose lives were touched by my father's unique brilliance, and whose hearts are hurt by his loss.

Bringing his remains home is a challenging and time consuming process, with painstaking hours of "waiting to see" in between. The US Embassy has been very supportive, but these things take time, and I have no way of telling when we will actually have his remains and effects in hand, and be able to begin planning a celebration of Paul's life. In the mean time, costs have also mounted, and unexpected expenses are bound to occur. I have increased the goal of this fundraiser to allow all who wish to help to do so.

I thank you for your sharing of this communal effort to bring my father's remains home. I thank you for your kindness, and sharing your memories of my dad with me on this difficult journey. Most of all, my heart goes out to all of you in your loss. We share this suffering together, of our fallen comrade, family member, friend, and loved one.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Keep sharing, keep loving.
Sincerely,
Nina
