The Story

Hello! We are four education majors at the University of Dayton and through the course: The Foundations of Literacy Through Literature, we have been given the opportunity to address the issue of book deserts in the Dayton community. We have collaborated with Karlos Marshall of The Conscious Connect to reach out to the local community and provide books centered around girls’ empowerment.

The Conscious Connect is an organization that is focused on ending book deserts in urban communities and transforming these books deserts into literary oases. A book desert as defined by The Conscious Connect is, “A geographical area that lacks the access and/or resources to high quality, affordable, and culturally relevant and responsive print books.” Our goal is to work alongside The Conscious Connect to provide girls and young women in the Dayton area with books centered around empowering women.

We, as a group of women, would like to support the eradication of book deserts in Dayton, Ohio. To achieve this goal, we have compiled a list of books from various genres that support the empowerment of women. Some of these genres include realistic fiction, such as President of the Whole Fifth Grade by Sherri Winston; informational texts, such as Malala’s Magic Pencil by Malala Yousafzai; poetry, such as All by Herself: 14 Girls Who Made a Difference by Ann Whitford; and traditional fantasy, such as Drum Dream Girl by Margarita Engle. In total, we desire to supply The Conscious Connect with approximately 45-50 books. To be able to provide these books, we hope to raise $800 for The Conscious Connect to be able to make the necessary book purchases. By donating, you can assist in the fight to end book deserts in the Dayton area while empowering girls and young women.

Thank you! Emily, Camila, Kristina, and Brittany
