Can you spare $10 to support The Barn & its mission?
We are a HEALTH, WELLNESS, EDUCATION, ARTS & MUSIC Centre for COMMUNITY SOLIDARITY in an age when we need to come together for healing to happen.
Our co-op was built by our community for our community, OWNED by our community (400+ local families) & we NEED YOU to continue on our journey!
HEALTH & WELLNESS EDUCATION
We empower the community with weekly free outreach programs teaching them about: the wild food (free & nutritious) growing all around us, traditional knowledge (how to preserve food, make sauerkraut, fermented foods, elderberry cough syrup, herbal salves, etc.) , herbal medicine (including Eastern/Western herbs & medicinal cannabis) , healing though food: how to use food as your medicine & cooking demonstration/classes
-Local live music is performed weekly on Sundays through our Open Mic program: a by donation forum is used to pay for our music hosts (including youth hosts) this is the ONLY open mic in our area that happens during the daytime and does NOT serve alcohol and therefore is fully accessable for our youth attendees & is family friendly.
PHYSICAL & MENTAL FITNESS
-Karma yoga classes are run each week by donation to teach people how to exercise their bodies, meditation is used to show how to exercise the mind
-Free Week of Wellness hosted once each season was recently cancelled due to lack of funding. This included free exercise/yoga/meditation classes and daily educational demonstrations to promote health, wellness & nutrition. Attendance to these classes were increased 4-6x during the free week demonstrating that people wanted to learn but could not afford to pay for regular classes.
Weekly art classes for adult & youth (by donation) were recently cancelled due to lack of funding
INCLUSIVENESS & HEALING
We are a safe place to learn & heal through food, art, music & community, people currently using our programs are: healing cancers/ MS/ chronic fatigue syndrome/autism/ mental illnesses (such as PTSD & depression) / food allergies (corn, soy, gluten, dairy, etc) / other health challenges, youth, low income, elderly, and those in severe need of community (whether they realize it or not).
We are here in no small part by thousands of heartfelt volunteer hours. All of our outreach programs are volunteer run charging only by donation so that everyone who needs them has access. Those who can afford to contribute pay it forward. Volunteer hours have been put in to provide services such as plumbing, electrical, composter-building, gardening, driveway grading (and re-grading), path building, shelf stocking, shelf building, financial guidance, bookkeeping, grant writing, program building, legal advice, administration work, marketing and advertising, graphic designing, website designing, general managing and much, much more! All of this has been given freely, motivated by hope that together we can facilitate investing directly back into our own community through our basic shopping needs.
We directly SUPPORT over 100 small local businesses such as:
farmers in the local/organic food movement who practice the food sustainability methods that keeps our land vibrant, bakers using whole organic ingredients and specialize in allergen free food, local artists & artisans (local exhibits & year round local artisan market), local musicians, holistic practitioners, ethical planet friendly small businesses, entrepreneurs & much more!
Although much of the Barn Co-operatives' initiatives are socially geared, the business is structured as a for-profit co-operative for ease of management. This does not mean that the business is driven by profit only. The ability to turn a profit is important to be able to support social initiatives, and when there is surplus it will eventually be given back to you, the members. With this in mind, The Barn Co-operative is more accurately described as a Social Enterprise. This means that it is a business whose main objective is to support positive development in our community. To top it off, its members, own every part of it! It has been necessary to run The Barn as a for-profit co-operative, but it does limit us in terms of donations and grants to build our socially focused programs. We have been unable to invest into these programs, as we have needed to focus on strengthening the aspects of the co-operative that bring in profits. These social programs do not turn a profit, and thus we have been forced to start cutting them back.
To address this, a group of volunteer members have joined together to start a charitable organization. The charity is in the final stage of approval but we are told by the CRA that they are 6 month behind in their approvals. Our co-op cannot wait for charity status to appeal for funding which is why we are asking for your help now. This charitable organization will help us to fund growth in community and accessibility focused programs but we have no access to grants until April 2018.
WHAT WE NEED
-to continue funding our outreach programs and reinstate programs recently cancelled
-bricks & mortar: our Barn's bottom level is leaking and the drainage around it needs to be fixed as well as eaves troughs repaired, build a community kitchen (to host by donation food preservation classes, youth & adult cooking classes (to address poor nutrition, hosted by local holistic nutritionists and provide affordable access to a certified kitchen for small local food businesses to be rented by donation),
-purchase new equipment for food prep so we can be a PEANUT free facility, which we currently do not have in our area) add a second washroom (wheelchair accessible)
-purchase a generator for our freezers as backup (several thousands of dollars worth of food was lost this year alone during an extended power outage due to weather)
Please help us continue our outreach programs, let's show what we can achieve if we stand together!
www.thebarncoop.ca local news stories http://ctv.news/i7BdTNg Our Mission is to create a sustainable, vibrant, and INCLUSIVE, center for health. Our methods to create this are: to secure a SUSTAINABLE and ATTAINABLE source to healthful organic, NON-GMO, and LOCAL foods, to facilitate the growth of a healthy COMMUNITY, and to integrate traditional, sustainable knowledge into our offerings, providing EDUCATION in all that we undertake. The vitality of our food is diminishing, and there is deepening need for community connection to make good food attainable and affordable for all. The Barn Co-op’s main focus includes reintroducing the use of food as medicine, preservation of food diversity, support of sustainability in food production and distribution, and continued education on the impact food has on our health, culture and environment. The Barn Co-op has risen out of a need for a community center where we can gather together and celebrate connection and creativity in a healthy wholesome environment.
Please help anyway you are able....donate $2, $10, $50, $5,000+ (donors helping us with larger amounts will be gifted lifetime honourary memberships)
The video shown above was filmed over 2 years ago, we have since purchased the Barn, built up our membership well beyond our wildest dreams and at the heart of all of this was the creation of our social outreach programs
