The Story

In 2014, led by Pete Frates and Pat Quinn, the world united to participate in the Ice Bucket Challenge and raised $115 million in six weeks for The ALS Association. Most of this money was committed to research for treatments and a cure. The scientific community has already credited the Ice Bucket Challenge with leading to new discoveries and advancing the search for a cure.

Now, The ALS Association is tackling the issue of the high costs of home health care for people living with ALS. These costs can be exorbitant and lead to bankruptcy for many families. The Frates family has been public about the high costs of Pete’s care, which they say are upwards of $90,000/month.

In recognition of the high costs and the perceptible impact on ALS patients, their families and caregivers, The ALS Association is launching the ALS Home Health Initiative, honoring Pete Frates. Read more about this worthy cause and help us spread the word by sharing this page with the hashtag #MLBFightsALS.

Inspired by Pete and the many individuals who have a great unmet need in home health care, the new program has a goal of augmenting caregiver support through financial grants. The grants will cover skilled nursing and/or custodial care to enable the person with ALS to continue to reside in their home while getting their care needs met.

About ALS

ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. The progressive nature of ALS results in the ongoing loss of a person’s ability to perform activities of daily living including mobility, communication, breathing, eating, bathing, dressing, toileting, transferring (walking) and continence. As a result, caregivers can become overwhelmed by the increased hours of personal caregiving, and the increasing complexity of medical care required for their loved one living with ALS.

Please consider joining Major League Baseball and its 30 Clubs in making a donation towards Pete's cause and that of the thousands of individuals living with ALS.

If you are unable to donate, please share this page with the hashtag #MLBfightsALS to show your solidarity-- Every share helps! For more information on ALS, please visit
